10 dead, dozens injured in road crash in southern Ghana: official

ACCRA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people died and dozens were injured in a road accident in southern Ghana on Sunday, an official confirmed.

Winneba Municipal Fire Officer Henry Asiedu said the accident happened when two buses traveling in opposite directions collided at Gomoa Mampong, a fishing community near the Accra-Cape Coast highway.

"It was fatal, and we had to take our time to collect the bodies. About 10 people have died, while the rest are receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital," Asiedu said.

Ghana: Parliament approves visa-free entry agreement for Ghanaians travelling to UAE

ACCRA, Aug 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Ghana Parliament has approved a visa waiver agreement between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, meaning Ghanaian passport holders seeking to travel to Dubai will be permitted free entry into the UAE.

According to details as contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Ghana and the UAE, the agreement comes with a mutual exemption of entry visa requirements with respect to diplomatic, service/special, and ordinary passport holders.

Ghana: ECOWAS mulls adopting new initiatives to tackle worsening insecurity

ACCRA, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is considering setting up a platform for national security advisors and early warning centers to enhance conflict prevention in the sub-region, a senior official said here Tuesday.

Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of the ECOWAS Commission, said at the opening of the 46th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council of the sub-regional bloc that these initiatives were critical due to the worsening insecurity situation in West Africa.

Mali coup leader to attend emergency West African summit

(Reuters) --- West African leaders will discuss on Sunday how to respond to a coup in Mali, gathering in the Ghanaian capital Accra for a summit to be attended by Assimi Goita, who was named interim Malian president after leading the takeover last week.

The revolt has prompted sanctions warnings from foreign powers, which fear it will derail a promised transition back to democracy following another coup last August led by Goita, an army colonel.

Ghana and UK finalise deal to provide duty free access to the UK market

ACCRA, Feb 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ghana and the United Kingdom (UK) has finalised an agreement that will provide duty-free and quota-free access for Ghana to the UK market and preferential tariff reductions for UK exporters.

Ghana’s Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen in a tweet said “I am pleased that we have finalised a new Interim Ghana-UK Trade Partnership Agreement providing duty-free & quota-free access for Ghana to the UK market & preferential tariff reductions for UK exporters.

“This reaffirms our longstanding trade & economic relationship.

Ghanaians confident of peaceful general elections

ACCRA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- As Ghana's general elections approach, the majority of people have expressed confidence that the elections will be held peacefully.

On Monday, more than 17 million eligible Ghanaians are expected to cast their ballots at 38,622 polling stations across the country to elect a president and 275 members of parliament.

John Osei Tutu Agyeman, a former broadcaster and media consultant, believes in the ability of the security services to ensure a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the elections.

Ghana to resume international flights amid COVID-19

ACCRA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced here on Sunday that the country is going to resume international flights on Sept.1 after a nearly five-month suspension.

In the meantime, the West African country's land and sea entry points would remain closed, the president said.

Akufo-Addo said in his latest COVID-19 nationwide broadcast that each traveler coming into the country would be required to produce a negative COVID-19 test result from a certified laboratory in their countries of origin.

Xenophobia: Ghanaian retail traders clash with Nigerian counterparts

ACCRA, July 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Some members of the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) on Friday clashed with Nigerian traders who are operating illegally at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle despite GUTA’s directive for them to remain closed until they provide legal documents.

The scuffle once again was about the infiltration of foreigners into Ghana’s retail business which by law is a reserve of only Ghanians or foreigners with proper documentation.
