Somalia: Security forces kill 44 al-Shabaab fighters

14 May 2023; MEMO: At least 44 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in a security operation in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, the country's Information Ministry said on Saturday, Anadolu reports.

The operation was conducted on Friday by the national intelligence and security agency backed by Somalia's international partners on the outskirts of Kurtowarey, a small town located 208 kilometers (229 miles) southwest of the nation's capital Mogadishu.

AU mission calls for renewed efforts to enhance peace, stability in Somalia

IMF reaches staff-level deal with Somalia

MOGADISHU, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it has reached a staff-level agreement with Somalia on the fifth review under the extended credit facility (ECF) arrangement.

The IMF said in a statement released Monday that the agreement will allow the lender to release some funds to Somalia once approved by the IMF board.

IMF mission chief Laura Jaramillo said despite significant challenges, including from the continued severe food crisis, Somalia has maintained strong reform momentum and program performance has been satisfactory.

Somali security forces end al-Shabab siege that killed 10

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Security forces in Somalia have ended a siege by al-Shabab extremists that killed 10 people and wounded three others at a home in the capital, Mogadishu.

The Information Ministry late Tuesday said the al-Qaida-linked fighters launched the rare attack on a private home with a suicide bombing. Al-Shabab often attacks hotels and government buildings.

Somalia gets hospital to provide treatment, care for security forces

MOGADISHU, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) said it has handed over a new hospital facility designed to provide quality treatment and care to Somali security forces involved in the fight against al-Shabab across the country.

Somalia's Minister of Defense Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the 68-bed facility located in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, would go a long way in providing urgent medical attention to soldiers and other security officers wounded on the battlefield.

Al-Shabaab: US air strike in Somalia ‘kills 30 militants’

MOGADISHU, Jan 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A US air strike assisting government troops in Somalia has killed about 30 al-Shabaab militants, the US military says.

The operation happened near the town of Galcad, about 260km northeast of the capital Mogadishu.

Over the past few days, the Somali army and al-Shabaab militants have fought for control of the town.

Friday’s air strike came as the army was being attacked by more than 100 militants, the US Africa Command says.

Earlier the militants killed seven soldiers after storming a military base in Galcad.

Somalia closes militant group al-Shabaab’s bank accounts

MOGADISHU, Jan 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Somali government said that it had closed 250 bank accounts belonging to al-Shabaab to cut off the militant group’s funding sources.

Additionally, 70 mobile money accounts of the militants were shut down as part of the government’s efforts to block their financial flow, senior Somali officials told a press conference here.

Somalia has declared an all-out war against the al-Qaida-linked militants. Although driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the militants are still conducting ambushes in rural areas.

Somali security forces kill local IS leader in Puntland

MOGADISHU, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Security forces in Somalia's Puntland State have killed a senior leader of the Somali wing of the Islamic State (IS) in Balidhidhin, a district in the northeastern Bari region, local authorities confirmed on Friday.

Abu-Albara Al Amani, an Ethiopian national, who was head of the group's operations in Puntland, was killed in a foiled attack on an army base on Thursday night, Puntland Security Forces (PSF) said.

Al Amani, from the Amhara region of Ethiopia, forcefully recruited many of his countrymen into the group, police said.
