China urges UK to quickly identify smuggling victims

BEIJING (AP) — China said Monday it hopes the U.K. can quickly identify the 39 people who were found dead in the back of a sealed truck in what British officials have called one of the country’s deadliest cases of human smuggling.

British police initially believed the victims were Chinese, but later acknowledged that details around the bodies in southeastern England were still evolving. Up to 24 Vietnamese families have since reported missing relatives whom they fear to be among the dead.

Asian stocks rise as China-US trade, Brexit fears recede

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets followed Wall Street higher Monday as investors looked ahead to a crowded week of corporate earnings, a possible U.S. interest rate cut and other potentially market-moving events.

Benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong all rose as fears about U.S.-Chinese trade tension and Brexit receded.

Markets shrugged off soft earnings from U.S. companies including Boeing and Caterpillar. Some 160 more companies are due to announce this week including Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, General Electric and Exxon Mobil.

Hong Kong rally targets police conduct, use of dogs

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kongers were set to rally Sunday over concerns about police conduct in monthslong pro-democracy demonstrations, including exposing police dogs to tear gas during chaotic confrontations with protesters.

Organizers planned a demonstration at a waterfront park on Sunday afternoon.

Hong Kong police have faced criticism for heavy-headed tactics including tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets and a water cannon to subdue protesters who have hurled bricks and firebombs.

Hong Kong court bans publishing police details, including photos

26 October 2019; AFP: A Hong Kong court has banned people from publishing a wide range of personal details about police officers and their families, including photos, in a bid to halt "doxxing" by pro-democracy protesters.

The temporary injunction, uploaded on government websites overnight, was criticised by some on Saturday for its broad wording and for further shielding the identity of officers as they clash with protesters.

Tech consultations on parts of U.S. trade deal completed: China's Commerce Ministry

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese Vice Premier Liu He had a phone call with U.S. trade officials as both countries confirmed technical consultations on some parts of a trade agreement were basically completed, China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Saturday.

Liu spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday night, the statement said.

The Commerce Ministry said both sides agreed to properly address each other’s core concerns.

Chinese research center named after Pakistani scientist Atta-ur-Rahman

BEIJING, Oct 25 (APP): The Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) has named its newly established One Belt One Road TCM Research Center after Academician Prof Atta-ur-Rahman at its main campus in Changsha, capital of China’s Hunan province.

The grand opening ceremony of the proposed center was held in HUCM, along with 5th Annual Bio-TCM International Conference.

More than 100 companies to take part in 'green' cars expo on Hainan

HAIKOU, October 25. /TASS/: More than hundred companies are expected to take part in Hainan's IV New Energy and Electric Vehicle Exhibition. According to the event's official website, the exhibition will run on October 25-27 in the city of Haikou.

China calls for 'severe punishment' for those involved in UK truck deaths

BEIJING (Reuters) - China called on Britain on Friday to seek “severe punishment” for those involved in the deaths of 39 people, believed to be Chinese nationals, found in a truck container near London, as a major state-backed paper said Britain should bear some responsibility for the case.

Paramedics and police found the bodies of 31 men and eight women on Wednesday on an industrial estate at Grays in Essex, about 20 miles (30 km) east of the British capital.

Chief of UN Country Team in China speaks highly of China-UN cooperation

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Chief of United Nations (UN) Country Team in China has spoken highly of the cooperation between China and the UN.

"The UN has always seen itself as a partner of China," said Nicholas Rosellini, UN Resident Coordinator in China.

"We have very good cooperation with China in terms of implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) inside China, and international development cooperation such as the Belt and Road Initiative," Rosellini told Xinhua. "China is a champion of the SDGs."
