Hong Kong protesters clamor for release of detained activist

HONG KONG (AP) — Several hundred masked protesters chanting for revolution have gathered at Hong Kong’s High Court for the appeal hearing of an activist sentenced to six years in prison for his part in a violent nightlong clash with police.

Edward Leung is among a generation of young political activists who emerged after 2014′s failed nonviolent protests over Beijing’s decision to restrict elections.

Leung has been an advocate of independence for Hong Kong, which reverted from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

Hong Kong Stock Exchange drops bid for London rival

8 October 2019; AFP: The Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Tuesday dropped its multibillion-dollar bid for the prized London Stock Exchange Group, which would have created a global markets titan.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) made the shock proposal for LSEG on September 11, but LSEG formally rejected the offer the following day citing "fundamental" flaws and concerns over its ties to the city's government.

China says it supports Pakistan in safeguarding its independent sovereignty

BEIJING (Reuters) - China supports Pakistan in safeguarding its independent sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said on Tuesday during a visit by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Khan is scheduled to meet both Li and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing this week to discuss the security situation in the disputed region of Kashmir as well as economic ties.

Chinese chief trade negotiator invited to hold new round of trade consultations in U.S.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of the U.S. side, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will lead a Chinese delegation to visit Washington for a new round of the China-U.S. high-level economic and trade consultations from Oct. 10 to 11.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue, will hold the economic and trade consultations with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Lam says Chinese military could step in if uprising gets bad

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam warned Tuesday that the Chinese military could step in if an uprising for democratic reforms that has rocked the city for months “becomes so bad” but reiterated the government still hopes to resolve the crisis itself.

Lam urged foreign critics to accept that the four months of protests marked by escalating violence were no longer “a peaceful movement for democracy.”

She said seeking Chinese intervention was provided for under Hong Kong’s constitution but that she cannot reveal under what circumstances she will do so.

Hong Kong’s public safety in jeopardy, says government

HONG KONG, Oct 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Hong Kong government on Monday said public safety in the island nation has been jeopardised and pushed to dangerous level.

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters were arrested following violent clashes that also saw a warning from the Chinese military for the first time since protests began here over the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill proposed by the government.

Hong Kong lawmakers challenge mask ban as protests persist

HONG KONG (AP) — A group of pro-democracy Hong Kong legislators filed a legal challenge against the government’s use of a colonial-era emergency law to criminalize the wearing of masks at rallies to quell anti-government demonstrations, which diminished in intensity but didn’t stop.

The mask ban that went into effect at midnight Friday triggered an overnight rash of widespread violence and destruction in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory, including the setting of fires and attacks on an off-duty police officer who fired a live shot in self-defense that wounded a 14-year-old.

PM Imran Khan to arrive in Beijing next week for official visit

BEIJING, Oct 5 (APP): Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan will arrive in the Chinese Capital in early next week for official visit to China.

During his visit, PM Imran Khan will hold separate meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang and discuss issues of regional and bilateral significance.

He will also discuss expansion of projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework besides cooperation in agriculture, industrial and socioeconomic sectors.

China launches HD observation satellite

TAIYUAN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China sent its observation satellite into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province at 2:51 a.m. Saturday (Beijing Time).

The satellite, Gaofen-10, was launched aboard a Long March-4C rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully. It was the 314th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

As part of the country's high-definition Earth observation project, the microwave remote sensing satellite is capable of providing photographs with a resolution of less than a meter.

Hong Kong suspends trains, appeals to public after rioting

HONG KONG (AP) — All subway and trains services are closed in Hong Kong after another night of rampaging violence that a new ban on face masks failed to quell.

After widespread overnight arson attacks, looting, fighting with police and beatings, the government on Saturday called on the public to swing behind it in condemning the increasingly violent protests.

John Lee, the government’s security secretary, says by not condemning violence, people are stoking it.
