Pak universities team competes at robotics championship in China

BEIJING, Aug 19 (APP): About 33 teams from universities of China, Pakistan, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Cote d’Ivoire competed at the first International Competition for Autonomous Running Intelligent Robots held here at the Beijing Science Center.

The representatives from universities in 20 different countries and regions also took part in the event hosted by the Beijing Association for Science and Technology and organized by the Beijing Institute of Electronics and the Institute of Microelectronics of Tsinghua University.

Spokesperson warns Taiwan's DPP to stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, on Monday warned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authority to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and its connivance towards the criminals.

Ma made the remarks in response to a question on the DPP's claim on recent moves by Tsai Ing-wen and relevant departments attempting to give assistance to certain Hong Kong residents' visits to Taiwan in the name of "humanitarian aid."

He told the DPP authority to stop undermining the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Over 470,000 people in Hong Kong say "no" to violence

HONG KONG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- "Anti-violence!", "Save Hong Kong!" Over 470,000 people gathered on Saturday in a rally held at Tamar Park, Admiralty of Hong Kong, to voice out their demand for peace and stability in Hong Kong.

At around 4 p.m. local time, the metro station near Tamar Park was swarming with people. An hour later, the rally started as the Chinese national anthem was ringing out.

Tens of thousands flood Hong Kong park for new rally

HONG KONG (AP) — Heavy rain fell on tens of thousands of umbrella-ready protesters Sunday as they started marching from a packed park in central Hong Kong, where mass pro-democracy demonstrations have become a regular weekend activity.

While recent rallies have been marked by violent clashes with police, organizers said they hoped Sunday’s assembly would be peaceful.

“We hope that there will not be any chaotic situations today,” said organizer Bonnie Leung. “We hope we can show the world that Hong Kong people can be totally peaceful.”

China condemns US lawmakers’ support for Hong Kong protests

HONG KONG (AP) — A spokesman for China’s ceremonial legislature condemned statements from U.S. lawmakers supportive of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, as more protests were planned Sunday following a day of dueling rallies that highlighted the political divide in the Chinese territory.

You Wenze called the lawmakers’ comments “a gross violation of the spirit of the rule of law, a blatant double standard and a gross interference in China’s internal affairs.”

China's commercial carrier rocket Smart Dragon-1 makes maiden flight

JIUQUAN, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's new carrier rocket Smart Dragon-1 (SD-1), designed for commercial use, made its maiden flight on Saturday, sending three satellites into planned orbit.

The rocket, developed by the China Rocket Co. Ltd. affiliated to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT), blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 12:11 p.m. (Beijing Time).

The three satellites, respectively developed by three Beijing-based companies, will be used for remote sensing services, communication and Internet of Things.
