Thailand: Myanmar's neighbours, some ASEAN members hold secretive talks on crisis - sources

BANGKOK, April 26 (Reuters) - Government and think-tank representatives from Myanmar and its neighbours, including India and China, held talks in New Delhi on Tuesday as part of a secretive effort to de-escalate a bloody crisis in the army-run Southeast Asian nation, two sources said.

Myanmar was plunged into conflict and economic chaos in 2021 after its powerful military overthrew the elected civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering an armed resistance that it has sought to violently crush.

BANGKOK, April 25 (Bernama-NNN) — The military must take the first steps to end the crisis in Myanmar says former United Nations Chief, Ban Ki-Moon.

Ban, who visited Myanmar on April 23 and 24, and met junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing and former President Thein Sein in Naypyidaw,  also called for an immediate cessation of violence and implementation of ASEAN’ Five-Point Consensus by the junta. 

The visit was seen as peacemaking mission to end violence and establish a peaceful, democratic, inclusive and legitimate government.

Thailand: Top election official in Myanmar assassinated by guerrillas

BANGKOK (AP) — A top election official in Myanmar was fatally shot in his car in Yangon, the country’s commercial capital, in the latest attack attributed to militants opposed to military rule.

Sai Kyaw Thu, deputy director-general of the military-appointed Union Election Commission, was shot multiple times on Saturday, according to the military’s information office, media reports and a statement of responsibility from an urban guerrilla group.

Thai authorities issue extreme heat warnings for dozens of provinces

BANGKOK, April 22 (Reuters) - Thai authorities on Saturday warned residents across large swathes of country, including the capital Bangkok, to avoid going outdoors due to extreme heat.

Parts of Asia are reporting extreme heat this month, with record-breaking temperatures seen in some countries. In Bangladesh and parts of India, extreme heat is leading to surge in power demand, causing power cuts and shortages for millions of people.

Thailand: Airstrikes on Myanmar village feared to have killed 100

BANGKOK (AP) — Airstrikes by Myanmar’s military on Tuesday killed as many as 100 people, including many children, who were attending a ceremony held by opponents of army rule, said a witness, a member of a local pro-democracy group and independent media.

The military is increasingly using airstrikes to counter a widespread armed struggle against its rule, which began in February 2021 when it seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. More than 3,000 civilians are estimated to have been killed since then by security forces.

Fighting in Myanmar sends thousands fleeing to Thailand

BANGKOK (AP) — More than 5,000 people have fled from eastern Myanmar into Thailand in recent days as fighting between Myanmar’s army and armed resistance groups has intensified in the border area, Thai media and officials said Thursday.

At least 5,428 civilians, including more than 800 children, crossed the border by Wednesday night from Myanmar’s Myawaddy district to seek refuge in Thailand’s Tak province, public broadcaster Thai PBS reported, citing an unidentified security official.

Thailand: Asian shares mixed as surging oil prices fan inflation fears

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mixed in Asia on Tuesday as investors watched for the latest moves by central banks, while oil prices steadied after shooting higher the day before following an announcement that major exporters plan to cut production.

Thailand starts general election candidate registrations

BANGKOK, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Thailand on Monday saw the registration of House of Representatives candidates for its general election to be held next month began nationwide.

The application process for the constituency candidates on Monday went smoothly and orderly in the Southeast Asian country, Election commissioner Thitichet Nuchanart told reporters.

It will take up to seven days for the Election Commission to check the candidates' qualification before approving their eligibility, Thitichet said.
