India: Students made to wear cardboard boxes to stop them cheating in exam

Haveri; 19 Oct 2019; (UMM): A private college in Karnataka made  students wear cardboard boxes during an exam to stop them from cheating. The bizarre incident took place at Bhagat Pre-University College of Haveri district.

The incident came to light when a member of the college management, Sateesh Herur, posted pictures of the students wearing the boxes on his Facebook account.

India: Detention centre in Bengaluru for foreigners to be operational soon

Bengaluru, Oct 17 (PTI) Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday said the detention centre for foreign nationals coming up on the city's outskirts, will be operationalised soon.

The minister also said the Bengaluru-specific anti-terrorist squad (ATS) probably will be operational in November first week.

"There is a detention centre ready near Nelamagala, it needs to operationalised, we have discussed it andthere will be no further delay in operationalising it," Bommai said.

India: HAL workers begin indefinite strike

Bengaluru, Oct 14 (PTI): The workers of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited across its nine units in the country, began an indefinite strike on Monday, pressing various demands including wage revision.

All India HAL Trade Unions Coordination Committee (AIHALTUCC) had on Sunday announced the indefinite strike after talks with the management ended in failure.

India: Modi heading a fascist regime, alleges Siddaramaiah

Mangaluru, Oct 5 (PTI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was running a 'fascist' government at the Centre.

"Modis administration is similar to that of Adolf Hitler. Nobody dares to speak against him," he said, talking to reporters at the international airport here.

Siddaramaiah was here on his way to Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru where he would meet the family of a farmer who committed suicide recently.

India: EC functioning like an "agent of BJP", says Cong

Bengaluru, Sep 27 (PTI) The Congress in Karnataka on Friday said the Election Commission was functioning like an "agent of BJP" and termed its move to defer bypolls to 15 assembly segments in the State till the Supreme Court decides on the case of disqualified Congress-JD(S) legislators as "arbitrary."

In the country's history,this is the first time the Election Commission (EC) has cancelled elections after issuing notification without giving any reason, the party claimed.

India: Man gets 10-year jail term for raping minor in Karnataka

Mangaluru, Sep 24 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a 34-year old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping and impregnating a minor girl in 2014.

B R Pallavi, judge of second Additional District and Sessions court here, which is also the special POCSO court, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Santhosh, resident of Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada district.

India: As Lunar night falls, hopes of Vikram lander waking up over

Bengaluru, Sep 20 (PTI) Hopes of re-establishing contact with India's moon mission Chandrayaan-2's lander seems to be all but over with its 14-day mission life set to end and the Lunar night falling early Saturday.

Lander Vikram, with rover Pragyan housed inside it, lost communication with the ground station on September 7 during its final descent, just 2.1 kms above the lunar surface, minutes before the planned touch-down on the Moon.

India: Karnataka govt will collapse any time, says former CM

Bengaluru, Sep 20 (PTI) JD(S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Friday predicted that the B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government "may collapse any time."

"If I have to make a political prediction... I'm not an astrologer for that, but looking at the way in which this government is going, looking at its conduct this government may collapse any time...lets wait and see," he told reporters in Channapatna.

Meanwhile, reacting to statements predicting mid-term polls, Minister and senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa ruled out any possibility of such polls.

India: ISRO racing against time to salvage lander-rover

Bengaluru, Sept 10 (PTI) ISRO is racing against time to spring 'Vikram' back to life and salvage the lander-rover part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission.

The lander Vikram, with rover 'Pragyan' tucked inside it, lost communication with the ground-stations during its final descent, just 2.1 kms above the lunar surface, minutes before the planned soft-landing in the early hours of Saturday.

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) said on Sunday Vikram had a "hard-landing".
