India: Farhan Akhtar sends consignment of PPE kits to hospital

Mumbai, May 20 (PTI) Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar says he is happy that his consignment of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits were sent to city-based Cama Hospital.

The actor had recently announced that he will be donating 1000 PPE kits for the healthcare professionals leading the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

He has also partnered with celebrity shout-out platform Tring to raise money for additional 1000 PPE kits.

New Delhi, May 19 (PTI) The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to transfer to CBI the criminal cases lodged against Republic TV Editor in-Chief Arnab Goswami for alleged defamatory news show telecast on April 21 in connection with the Palghar mob-lynching case.

India: Mumbai residents oppose quarantine centre in their area

Mumbai, May 18 (PTI) Residents of some housing societies in suburban Ghatkopar here on Monday came out on a road demanding that the quarantine centre for coronavirus cases be shifted from Cama Lane locality, police said.

The 150-bed facility was set up in a building located in front of residential buildings.

Many residents came out on streets outside their buildings in evening for their demand.

"Members of some four to five residential societies opposed the facility at a time when people should help each other," said local ML Parag Shah of the BJP.

India: Body goes missing from civic hospital in Maha

Thane, May 18(PTI) The body of a 29-year-old man from Navi Mumbai has gone missing from a civic hospital in Vashi, police said on Monday.

Senior inspector of the Vashi police station Sanjeev Dhumal said police have received acomplaint from relatives of the deceased and also hospital authorities about the body going missing from the mortuary of the NMMC-run hospital.

"We are probing into the complaint," he said.

Details will be available only after the probe is over, Dhumal said.

India: Maharashtra divided into red and non-red zones

Mumbai, May 19 (PTI) The Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced categorization of various areas into red and non-red zones for the purpose of allowing or restricting business and other activities in view of coronavirus pandemic.

The government on Tuesday issued new guidelines which would come into effect from May 22. During the earlier phases of lockdown, the state (as other parts of the country) were divided into red, orange and green zones.

India: Maharashtra Govt extends lockdown till May 31

Mumbai, May 17 (PTI) Maharashtra government on Sunday extended the lockdown in the state till May 31, an official said.

State Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta has issued an order notifying extension of the lockdown, the official said.

"The calibrated phase-wise relaxation/lifting of lockdown orders will be notified in due course," the order said.

The present lockdown was valid from May 2 to 17.

India: TV actor Manmeet Grewal struggling with finances amid lockdown commits suicide

Mumbai, May 17 (PTI) TV actor Manmeet Grewal, who worked on shows like "Aadat Se Majboor" and "Kuldeepak", committed suicide after struggling with dwindling finances amid lockdown, family friend-producer Manjit Singh Rajput said.

Grewal, who was originally from Punjab, hanged himself on Friday night at his Kharghar residence here where he lived with his wife. He was 32.

India: Industry bodies in Pune complain of poaching of workers

Pune, May 14 (PTI) With migrant labourers leaving Maharashtra in large numbers, industry bodies in Pune district on Thursday said that labour contractors are now `poaching' remaining workers.

As per the estimate of the Federation of Chakan Industries (FCI), around one lakh migrant labourers have so far left Chakan-Talegaon industrial belt.

"Only 50 to 60 thousand workers are left behind, and more people are leaving," said Dileep Batwal, secretary, FCI.

India: Migrant worker walks 30km to catch train collapses, dies

Mumbai, May 15 (PTI) A 45-year-old migrant worker from Rajasthan, who walked 30km from his residence to catch a Shramik Special train, collapsed and died near the Vasai Road railway station, an official said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday evening and the deceased was identified as Harish Chander Shankarlal, a resident of Bhayander in adjoining Thane district, he said.

India: Migrant woman gives birth on her way home then walks 160 KM

Nashik; 15 May 2020 (UMM): Wife of a migrant worker has given birth on her way home then continued walking 160 Km with her newborn baby.

Woman was walking with her husband and their four other children from the city of Nashik to the town of Satna when her journey was interrupted due to labour pain.
