India: Pvt lenders may lose deposits to PSBs due to Yes Bank bailout

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) The Yes Bank rescue has undermined confidence of depositors in private sector lenders and will lead to smaller entities losing deposits to state-run banks, a report said on Tuesday.

The research report from global ratings agency Moody's Investors Service comes at a time when many private sector lenders have reported a contraction of deposits in the March quarter when the Yes Bank crisis happened. The RBI - which had to steer the over Rs 10,000 crore Yes Bank bailout - has repeatedly assuaged such concerns, saying money in all the banks is safe.

India: Dalit scholar and activist Teltumbde sent in NIA custody

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) A special court here on Tuesday remanded Dalit scholar and activist Anand Teltumbde in the custody of the National Investigation Agency till April 18 in Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case.

Teltumbde was arrested by the NIA earlier in the day after he surrendered before it following the Supreme Court's directives.

Indian PM failed to address economic concerns: Sena-NCP

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) The Shiv Sena and NCP said Prime Minister Narendra Modis address to the nation on Tuesday lacked substance as he did not suggest ways to strengthen the economy or a relief package for the poor and those worst hit by the lockdown.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande also took a dig at the prime minister, saying he thankfully did not give any activity to people this time like clanging utensils or lighting lamps.

India: Used N-95 masks worth lakhs seized in Palghar

Palghar, Apr 14 (PTI) Three persons were arrested for allegedly storing used N-95 masks worth over Rs 50 lakh at a residential locality in Vasai town of Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Tuesday.

At least 25,000 used N-95 masks worth Rs 51.34 lakh were seized from a house in Gadgapada area of Virar in Vasai, inspector Sidhhava Jaibhaye of the local crime branch said.

India: Mosque in Mumbai feeds labourers during lockdown

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) A mosque in suburban Sakinaka area of Mumbai is offering meals to around 800 labourers who have lost their jobs because of lockdown.

It is also providing ration of rice and pulses to people in nearby localities, said Maulana Atif Sanabali of the Jama Masjid Ahle Hadis, located on Khairani road.

Australian doctor seeks bail from Bombay HC

Mumbai, Apr 13 (PTI) An Australian doctor arrested in November last year for alleged possession of drugs has approached Bombay High Court seeking bail claiming he is working towards medicinal use of cannabis.

Reza Borhani, in his plea, said he should be granted bail in view of directions passed by the Supreme Court on the temporary release of inmates to reduce jail crowding in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

India: Six Taj hotel employees test positive for coronavirus

Mumbai, Apr 11 (PTI) At least six employees working at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace and Towers hotel in south Mumbai have tested positive for coronavirus, a doctor attached to a private hospital said on Saturday.

Indian Hotels Company, which runs the Taj Hotel chain, confirmed that some of its employees have been found positive for virus, but did not specify the number.

India: Over 3.4k inmates released from Maha jails

Mumbai, Apr 10 (PTI) The Maharashtra prisons department has released on bail 3478 prisoners till Friday to reduce crowding in jails due to the coronavirus outbreak, officials said.

These prisoners are serving jails terms of less than seven years, they said.

"While 469 prisoners were released from Arthur Road Jail, 350 were freed from Thane Central, 330 from Taloja Central, 275 from Yerawada, 151 from Amravati, 141 from Nagpur, 118 from Aurangabad Central and 100 from Nashik Central," he said.

India: Man kills self over coronavirus scare

Nashik, April 11 (PTI) A 31-year-old man, who assumed that he contracted coronavirus, allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra's Nashik city, police said on Saturday.

Pratik Raju Kumavat, a resident of Chehedi area of Nashik Road, allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling of his home on Saturday and left a suicide note stating that he might have contracted coronavirus, an official said.
