CHICAGO (AP) — The man next on the list to be executed by the federal government after a nearly 20-year hiatus ended this week may have a better chance of avoiding lethal injection, legal experts say, because he suffers from dementia and so, his lawyers say, can no longer grasp why he’s slated to die.

Wesley Ira Purkey, convicted of a gruesome 1998 kidnapping and killing, is scheduled for execution Wednesday at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Daniel Lewis Lee was put to death Tuesday after his own 11th-hour legal bids failed.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) warned on Tuesday it will be more than two years before the industry sees a sustainable recovery from the “staggering” impact of the coronavirus pandemic, with demand largely tracking the curve of infections in different places.

“We’re at a stall right now,” CEO Ed Bastian told Reuters, saying demand that built up over June for travel to places like Las Vegas, Florida or New York had suffered due to fresh cases and quarantines, while picking up to some mountain and international destinations.

CHICAGO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed and 63 others injured in Chicago over the Independence Day holiday weekend as a result of gun violence.

The 17 killed included two children, one is a 7-year-old girl and the other a 14-year-old boy.

CHICAGO (AP) — A loose network of Facebook groups that took root across the country in April to organize protests over coronavirus stay-at-home orders has become a hub of misinformation and conspiracy theories that have pivoted to a variety of new targets. Their latest: Black Lives Matter and the nationwide protests of racial injustice.

These groups, which now boast a collective audience of more than 1 million members, are still thriving after most states started lifting virus restrictions.

And many have expanded their focus.

CHICAGO, July 5 (NNN-XINHUA) – Chicago is a little quiet during this year’s Independence Day holiday, as the local government has cancelled the fireworks displays at Navy Pier and most of the surrounding suburbs, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

With some 40 states in the United States reporting resurgence of COVID-19 cases, Illinois Governor, J.B. Pritzker, and Chicago Mayor, Lori Lightfoot, have no plans to reverse the reopening course, after lifting some restrictions statewide last week. But they are determined to implement the reopening with restrictions more strictly.

Government personnel involved in flight tests knew about changes Boeing made to the flight-control system, but engineers responsible for certifying the plane did not, according to the report, which is expected to be released Wednesday.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The 48-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting two coworkers and critically wounding another at a central Illinois warehouse Friday died after apparently shooting himself, the city’s police chief said.

Springfield police believe Michael L. Collins fatally shot himself Friday after shooting and killing two co-workers at the Bunn-O-Matic facility shortly after 11 a.m. Collins, of Springfield, also critically injured another woman, police said.

CHICAGO (AP) — Amy Klobuchar says she is dropping out of the running to be vice president and urging Democrat Joe Biden to select a woman of color instead.

The white Minnesota senator, who had seen her prospects fall as racial tensions swept the nation, said Thursday that she called the presumptive presidential nominee Wednesday night and made the suggestion. Biden had already committed to choosing a woman as his running mate.

CHICAGO, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Two people have been killed during unrest in the Chicago suburb of Cicero as protests continued over the death of George Floyd, says a town official.

Spokesman Ray Hanania said 60 people were arrested but did not provide additional information about those killed or the circumstances of their deaths.

The Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriff’s Office were called in to help local police as businesses were broken into and items stolen.

The Cicero Police Department has urged residents to stay at home.
