UN commends release of Gaddafi's son, other former regime officials in Libya

TRIPOLI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday praised the decision of the Libyan authorities to release Al-Saadi Gaddafi, son of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi who was toppled and killed in 2011, along with other officials of the former regime.

Iran: Window for nuclear talks won't remain open forever

07 Sep 2021; MEMO: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said yesterday that the window for dialogue to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement will not remain open forever.

Khatibzadeh added that Tehran will participate in the talks and urged the US administration to come to Vienna with a practical and realistic programme, and to fully implement its commitments according to the nuclear agreement which will help revive the agreement.

Palestine: Rights group presses PA Prime Minister about freedoms in West Bank

07 Sep 2021; MEMO: Rights group Lawyers for Justice presses Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh to discuss freedoms in the occupied West Bank.

According to Safa news agency, the questions relate to the summoning and detention campaigns carried out against activists by the PA security services without judicial orders.

"What do you, Shtayyeh, say about the detentions that have been documented since the announcement of the state of emergency?" the group asked.

Israel security delegation pays secret visit to Egypt

07 Sep 2021; MEMO: Israeli National Security Adviser, Eyal Hulata, secretly visited Cairo and met with Egypt's Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel and other Egyptian officials, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed revealed yesterday.

According to sources, Hulata headed the Israeli delegation who met with Kamel along with the Egyptian intelligence official who is in charge of the Gaza file, Ahmed Abdul-Khaleq.

Warrants issued for 214 suspects in failed 2016 Turkish coup

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish prosecutors have issued detention warrants for 214 serving and former military personnel over alleged ties to a 2016 coup attempt, the state-run news agency said Tuesday.

The investigation, led by prosecutors in the western city of Izmir, had led to 137 arrests across 41 provinces so far, Anadolu Agency reported.

Most of the suspects were dismissed from the armed forces in the wake of the failed coup, but 44 were serving members. The highest-ranking suspect was a colonel.

Parties campaign ahead of Morocco’s pivotal elections

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Politicians from dozens of political parties were campaigning for a final day Tuesday, trying to reach out to millions of Moroccans despite social distancing measures a day before pivotal legislative, regional and local elections, with a moderate Islamist party hoping to remain at the helm of government.

Strict safety guidelines in place as the North African kingdom grapples with a new wave of COVID-19 have restricted campaigning, and candidates’ ability to reach the 18 million eligible voters, half the country’s population.

Israeli army says it launched strikes on Hamas site in Gaza

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel launched airstrikes on what it said was a Hamas military site in the Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, after incendiary balloons were sent into Israeli territory, the army said.

Fighter jets struck a Hamas rocket manufacturing workshop as well as a Hamas military compound in Khan Yunis, a city in southern Gaza, according to the army statement.

The army said the compound houses a cement factory used for building tunnels used for terror attacks “and is purposefully located in a civilian area adjacent to a mosque and a water treatment site.”

Iraq: Daesh attack kills 13 police – Security

KIRKUK (IRAQ), Sept 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Thirteen Iraqi policemen were killed in Daesh group attack against a checkpoint in the country’s north early Sunday, security and medical sources said.

The attack, in the region of Al-Rashad around 65 kilometers south of Kirkuk city, took place just after midnight, a senior Iraqi police officer said.

“Members of the Daesh organization targeted a federal police checkpoint,” said the officer, adding “13 security personnel were killed and three wounded.” 

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. 

Blinken arrives in Qatar as four Americans leave Afghanistan

DOHA, Sept 6 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Qatar on Monday as Washington seeks support for the evacuation of Americans and at-risk Afghans left behind in Afghanistan and build a consensus among allies on how to respond to the Taliban.

A senior State Department official told reporters on Blinken's flight that Washington has facilitated the safe departure of four more Americans overland from Afghanistan.
