Iran says not behind attack on Israeli-operated oil tanker off Oman

01 Aug 2021; MEMO: Iran on Sunday denied involvement in an attack that targeted an Israeli-operated oil tanker off the shores of Oman, in which two crew members were killed, reports Anadolu Agency.

Speaking in his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Israeli accusations for Iran of being behind the attack were "baseless".

Syria: Assad asks PM Arnous to form new cabinet

01 Aug 2021; MEMO: Syrian President Bashar al Assad has tasked Prime Minister Hussein Arnous with forming a new government following an election in May that extended Assad's two-decade-old presidency, reports Reuters.

Assad originally named Arnous as prime minister last August to replace Imad Khamis, who was fired as Syria grappled with a major economic crisis and a plunging currency with much of the country shattered by a 10-year civil war.

Tunisia's Ghannouchi discharged from hospital after medical checks

01 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi was discharged from hospital after conducting medical checks, the moderate Islamist Ennahda party said, reports Anadolu Agency.

The party said in a statement that Ghannouchi was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after feeling ill.

Ghannouchi "left the hospital after conducting medical checks and receiving treatment," the statement said.

Turkey welcomes reopening of strategic coastal road in Libya

01 Aug 2021; MEMO: Turkey welcomed the reopening of a strategic coastal road linking Libya's east to its west, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Saturday, reports Anadolu Agency.

"We welcome the official opening of the Misrata – Sirte Coastal Road on 30 July 2021, which has been closed for a long time," it said in a statement.

Palestine: Ismail Haniyeh re-elected as chief of Hamas

01 Aug 2021; MEMO: Ismail Haniyeh has been elected to a second term as head of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, two Palestinian officials told Reuters on Sunday.

"Brother Ismail Haniyeh was re-elected as the head of the movement's political office for a second time," one official told Reuters. His term will last four years.

Tunisian police detain lawmaker, Islamist party officials

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian authorities jailed an opposition lawmaker Friday and briefly detained four members of the powerful Islamist movement Ennahdha in the wake of the president’s decision to seize exceptional powers, according to Tunisian media reports.

The Ennahdha members were brought before investigating magistrates and accused of trying to incite violence outside the parliament building after President Kais Saied’s announcement Sunday, according to party official Riadh Chaidi.

Libya: NGO rescues nearly 100 migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean

TRIPOLI, July 31 (NNN-AGENCIES) — German NGO Sea-Watch says it rescued nearly 100 migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean overnight, many of whom were injured, some with severe “fuel burns” – chemical burns caused by exposure to gasoline mixed with seawater.

Late on Thursday, the vessel Sea-Watch 3 rescued 33 migrants and refugees from two boats which had been intercepted by the Libyan coast guard in the search and rescue zone of the Mediterranean assigned to Malta, the organisation said in a Twitter post early on Friday morning.

Turkish wildfire leaves charred home and ashes, as blazes continue

MANAVGAT, July 31 (Reuters) - Days after a raging wildfire in southern Turkey drove his family from the home they lived in for four decades, Mehmet Demir returned on Saturday to discover a burnt-out building, charred belongings and ashes.

Bedsprings, a ladder, metal chairs and some kitchenware were the only things left identifiable after some of the worst fires in years tore through the region, with several still burning four days after they erupted on Wednesday.

4 killed in twin attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and six others wounded in twin attacks by militants of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group in western and eastern Iraq, security sources said on Saturday.

In the western province of Anbar, the militants attacked a policeman's house outside the town of Heet, some 160 km west of Baghdad at about 2:00 a.m. local time (2300 GMT), Maj. Abdul-Sattar al-Dulaimi of the provincial police told Xinhua.
