Official: Sudan seeking debt relief from Gulf Arab nations

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan will seek relief from wealthy Gulf Arab nations, aiming to get as much as 60% of the African country’s $30 million in debt to them written off, the Sudanese finance minister said.

The announcement late Sunday by the minister, Gebreil Ibrahim, came after cash-stripped Sudan received a $14.1 billion debt relief from the Paris Club of creditor nations last week.

Grand Mosque In Mecca Receives 1st Batch Of Pilgrims As Hajj Begins

RIYADH, Jul 18 (NNN-SPA) – The first batch of pilgrims arrived yesterday, at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, to perform their first ritual for this year’s Hajj.

The ritual was performed with huge preparations and precautionary measures against COVID-19, and there are different locations that can accommodate 11,000 pilgrims in total, according to the General Presidency for Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques and the director of crowd management at the Grand Mosque.

Turkey condemns EU court ruling on headscarf ban as violation of freedoms

ANKARA, July 18 (Reuters) - Turkey on Sunday slammed a ruling by a top European Union court allowing the banning of headscarves under certain conditions as a "clear violation of religious freedoms", adding the move would exacerbate prejudices against Muslim women in Europe.

The Luxembourg-based EU Court of Justice (CJEU) ruled on Thursday that companies in the bloc can ban employees from wearing a headscarf under certain conditions, if they need to do so to project an image of neutrality to customers. 

Iran insists prisoner swap deal was agreed with U.S., says ready to proceed 'today'

DUBAI, July 18 (Reuters) - Iran insisted on Sunday that a prisoner swap deal has been agreed with the United States, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said, a day after Washington denied such an agreement had been reached.

"'Outrageous' = the US denying simple fact that there IS an agreed deal on the matter of the detainees. Even on how to announce it," Saeed Khatibzadeh said in a tweet.

France rocked by anti-vaccination, health pass demonstrations

Israel: Jews visit East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Compound to mark holy day despite tensions

JERUSALEM, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Jews visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem on Sunday to mark the Jewish holy day of Tisha B'Av, despite tensions between Palestinians and Israeli police.

Early in the morning, Israeli police stormed the compound as clashes erupted with Muslim worshippers. A statement issued by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf that manages the site said five Palestinian have been arrested, while the Palestinian Red Crescent reported several injuries among the Palestinians.

Flood-struck areas of Turkey’s Black Sea region to be declared disaster area

17 July 2021; AA: Parts of Turkey’s Black Sea region hit by flooding and landslides will be officially declared a disaster area, the nation’s president said on Saturday.

Speaking at a hospital opening and inaugurations of other newly completed projects in Turkey’s eastern Erzurum province, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the formal declaration will be announced after the next Cabinet meeting, likely at the start of next week.
