EU Says Israel’s Measures Of Displacing Palestinians “Illegal”

RAMALLAH, Jul 6 (NNN-WAFA) – The European Union (EU) said yesterday that, Israel’s measures of displacing the Palestinians in East Jerusalem and demolishing their homes “are illegal and lead to more violence.”

In a press statement, the EU mission in Palestine, said that, the Israeli authorities demolished last week, a Palestinian store, in the al-Bustan neighbourhood, in East Jerusalem.

Lebanon is 'days away' from social explosion, PM Diab warns

BEIRUT, July 6 (Reuters) - Lebanon is a few days away from a social explosion, caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab warned on Tuesday, calling on the international community to save a country in deep economic crisis.

The World Bank has called Lebanon's crisis one of the worst depressions of modern history. The currency has lost more than 90% of its value and more than half of the population has been propelled into poverty.

Anger over fuel shortages has spilled into fights at petrol stations and the prime minister appeared to be warning of the prospect of more unrest.

After protests, Iran's President apologises over power blackouts

DUBAI, July 6 (Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani apologised to Iranians on Tuesday over massive power outages during a heatwave that have drawn widespread criticism and triggered street protests.

Officials have blamed the blackouts on surging demand for power, along with low rainfall cutting hydroelectric output and illegal cryptocurrency mining farms accessing subsidised electricity.

Africa's COVID-19 cases near 5.7 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 5,698,966 as of Tuesday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 147,087 while 4,938,770 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

Iran's new gov't not to change stance on nuke deal: spokesman

TEHRAN, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Iran's position on the Iran nuclear deal and the removal of sanctions will not change with the shift of government, the Iranian spokesman for the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

"The government of (President-elect Ebrahim) Raisi will also be committed to it (potential agreement) ... because adherence to the commitments and promises is always a principle for the Islamic republic," Saeed Khatibzadeh said during his weekly press briefing.

Iran accuses Israel of June attack on civilian nuclear site

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran accused Israel on Tuesday of mounting a sabotage attack on a nuclear facility near Tehran last month, the country’s state-run news agency reported as authorities acknowledged for the first time that the mysterious assault had caused structural damage to the site.

Israel arrests Palestinian rights lawyer who protested against Abbas

06 July 2021; MEMO: A Palestinian human rights lawyer was detained by Israeli forces early on Sunday after taking part in a protest in the West Bank against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the international rights group Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) said.

According to ICHR, Farid Al-Atrash was arrested at an Israeli checkpoint east of Jerusalem. He had been taking part in a protest against the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.

Egypt ends impounding of ship that got stuck in Suez Canal

CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian court on Tuesday lifted a three-month long judicial seizure of a hulking shipping vessel that had blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week earlier this year, paving the way for it to leave Egypt.

Following the decision by the court in the city of Ismailia, the Ever Given would be allowed to leave the canal on Wednesday, after a ceremony in the canal city of Ismailia.

Israel blocks law that keeps out Palestinian spouses

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s parliament early on Tuesday failed to renew a law that bars Arab citizens from extending citizenship or residency rights to spouses from the occupied West Bank and Gaza, in a tight vote that raised doubts about the viability of the country’s new coalition government.

The 59-59 vote, which came after an all-night session of the Knesset, marked a major setback for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
