Woman on Sudan’s ruling council quits, saying civilians are being ignored

KHARTOUM, May 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — One of only two women on Sudan’s ruling Sovereignty Council said she had resigned, accusing the military-dominated transitional government of ignoring civilian voices.

The 14-member military-civilian council was set up along with a cabinet of technocrats to steer Sudan through a transition after the army toppled long-serving autocrat Omar al-Bashir in 2019 following months of popular protests.

Egypt Sends 130 Truckloads Of Aid To Gaza

CAIRO, May 23 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt sent 130 truckloads of aid supplies to the bordering Gaza Strip late Friday, including foodstuffs, medicines, clothes and household essentials, the Egyptian presidency said.

The 2,500-tonne aid package, provided by the Tahya Misr Fund, under the presidency, also covers such supplies as mattresses, disinfectants, face masks, and baby formula.

UAE says it is ready to facilitate Israel-Palestinian peace efforts

(Reuters) --- The United Arab Emirates stands ready to facilitate peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians, the de facto ruler of the Gulf state said in remarks carried on state media on Sunday.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan made the comments in a telephone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, whose country, with U.S. support, brokered a ceasefire on Friday that ended the fiercest fighting in years between Israel and Islamist militant group Hamas.

UAE asks to host 2023 UN climate change conference

23 May 2021; MEMO: The United Arab Emirates has asked to host the COP 28 international conference on climate change in 2023, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan said on Sunday, reports Reuters.

The annual Conference of Parties (COP) is the decision-making body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Poland to buy Turkish drones

23 May 2021; MEMO: Poland will buy 24 armed drones from Turkey, the Polish defence minister said on Saturday, becoming the first NATO member to buy Turkish-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), reports Reuters.

The Bayraktar TB2 drones, the first of which are due to be delivered next year, will be armed with anti-tank projectiles. Poland will also buy a logistics and training package, said Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.

Israel wants captive troops in return for rebuilding of Gaza

22 May 2021; MEMO: Israel's Defense Minister Benny Gantz said the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip is conditional on reaching a settlement on the return of soldiers missing in the Palestinian territory, Anadolu Agency reported.

"We must condition development and reconstruction [in Gaza] not only on a calm, but also on the return of soldiers' bodies and civilians held hostage in Gaza," Gantz said in an interview with the Israeli KAN channel.

Yemen: Houthi leader dismisses U.S. sanctions, warns of expanded attacks

(Reuters) --- A leader of Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement on Sunday dismissed U.S. sanctions on military officials and threatened possible expanded attacks on "aggressor countries" after Washington urged the group to engage seriously in peace efforts.

The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on two Houthi military officials leading an offensive to seize Yemen's Marib region as the U.S. special envoy on Yemen called for de-escalation and pressed for a ceasefire deal.
