Tunisia: Ennahda says return to individual rule is unacceptable

27 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Ennahda movement in Tunisia said on Monday that any "return to individual rule is unacceptable," Anadolu has reported. The movement warned against any action that might divert the country from the gains of the revolution.

Ennahda is the largest parliamentary bloc in the Tunisian parliament, with 54 out of 217 seats. The statement was issued after a meeting of its Shura Council over the weekend.

Egypt president pardons 2,674 prisoners

27 Apr 2021; MEMO: Egypt's Prison Authority yesterday released 2,674 prisoners from jail after a presidential pardon was issued on the occasion of Sinai Liberation Day, Egypt Today reported.

According to local media, this is the second presidential pardon within a week as 1,686 prisoners were released on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

PA president to announce cancellation of elections

27 Apr 2021; MEMO: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is set to announce the cancellation of the Palestinian elections under the pretext of Israel's refusal to allow Jerusalemites to cast their votes, various local and Israeli sources have reported. Abbas is also the head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation as well as the Fatah movement.

UAE backs France operations along Africa coast

27 Apr 2021; MEMO: United Arab Emirates has begun its logistical flights to support the France-led international alliance's efforts in "combating terrorism along the African Sahel region," the Emirates' Ministry of Defence announced yesterday.

"The first flight departed Abu Dhabi in the presence of the ministry's Commander of Joint Operations at Saleh Mohammad Saleh Al-Ameri, and French Ambassador to the UAE, Xavier Chatel," the ministry said in a statement.

Tunisian PM rules out nationwide lockdown despite rapid increase of COVID-19 cases

TUNIS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi has ruled out again the possibility of a nationwide lockdown despite the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases in the country, the Tunis Afrique Presse reported Monday.

However, targeted lockdown could be imposed to preserve the balance between the health of citizens and economic activities, Mechichi said.

UAE: Explosive-laden ‘drone’ boat targets Saudi port of Yanbu

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A remotely piloted boat packed with explosives targeted the Saudi port of Yanbu in the Red Sea on Tuesday, the kingdom said, with the blast sending black smoke into the sky off the coast.

Saudi Arabia claimed to have intercepted and destroyed the attack boat. However, private security firms suggested commercial traffic near the port may have been hit in the assault.

Egyptian officials: Palestinians plan to call off elections

JERUSALEM (AP) — Egyptian officials say the Palestinian Authority plans to call off its first elections in 15 years, citing Israel’s refusal to allow voting in east Jerusalem.

The decision would effectively grant Israel a veto over the holding of elections, though President Mahmoud Abbas could also benefit from the canceling a vote in which his fractured Fatah party is expected to lose power and influence to the Islamic militant group Hamas.

Iran, US warships in first tense Mideast encounter in a year

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — American and Iranian warships had a tense encounter in the Persian Gulf earlier this month, the first such incident in about a year amid wider turmoil in the region over Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal, the U.S. Navy said Tuesday.

Footage released by the Navy showed a ship commanded by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard cut in front of the USCGC Monomoy, causing the Coast Guard vessel to come to an abrupt stop with its engine smoking on April 2.
