Israel army recommends toning down maritime tension with Iran

15 Mar 2021; MEMO: Israeli security officials have recently recommended that Tel Aviv should tone down maritime tension with Iran, RT reported Hebrew media saying yesterday.

According to the Israeli news website Walla, Israeli security officials said they recommend this as the new US administration is still laying down its policies.

Turkey sets up new military base north of Syria's Raqqa

15 Mar 2021; MEMO: Turkish forces have established a new military base north of the city of Raqqa, eastern Syria, local sources reported.

The sources said yesterday that the new base is equipped with an early-warning air defence system to counter the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

The base is located near the international road known as the M4 highway.

Turkey has recently established four military bases in Syria.

Turkey agrees to release 'fair share' of Tigris, Euphrates waters to Iraq

15 Mar 2021; MEMO: The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, said yesterday that Turkey has approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that forces Ankara to release a fair share of Tigris and Euphrates waters to Iraq.

The Iraqi minister said in a statement that the Turkish special envoy has confirmed that there are agreements on the horizon and memoranda of understanding will be signed in the near future following parliament's approval.

Netanyahu leading Israel to 'civil war': Gideon Sa'ar

15 Mar 2021; MEMO: Former Likud member and chief of the New Hope Party in Israel, Gideon Sa'ar, has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leading the country into a "civil war", Hebrew media reported yesterday.

His remarks came after members of his former party, which Netanyahu heads, attacked a New Hope Party member during an event. The activist, according to the Times of Israel, fainted and was evacuated by an ambulance.

Jailed French tourist in Iran faces spying charges, lawyer says

DUBAI (Reuters) - A French tourist arrested in Iran 10 months ago, Benjamin Briere, faces charges of “spying and propaganda against the system”, one of his lawyers told Reuters on Monday.

He gave the new details of the case at a time of heightened tension between Tehran and the West, as the United States and European parties to Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal - including France - try to restore the pact abandoned in 2018 by then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Afghan peace talks should rotate among countries, envoy says amid stall

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Afghan peace talks, now stalled in Qatar, should be rotated to other venues, Afghanistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said, indicating the Qatari hosts had not pushed hard enough for the Taliban to reduce violence.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban have been held in Qatar since last year, after the United States agreed to withdraw its troops. But violence has increased and the government accuses the militants of failing to meet obligations to reduce attacks.

Iran suspends flights from Iraq over new strain of COVID-19

TEHRAN, March 14 (Xinhua) -- All the flights from Iraq to Iran were suspended for one week as of Sunday, the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization announced in a statement.

This decision was made as a preemptive measure to protect the health of the Iranian citizens amidst the spread of a mutated type of COVID-19, said the statement carried by the official IRNA news agency.

All the airlines are required to inform their passengers about the new measure in a timely manner, it added.

Yemen's Houthis say target Saudi airports with bomb-laden drones

SANAA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi militia said they targeted Abha airport and King Khaled Airbase in Khamis Mushait city in southwestern Saudi Arabia, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported on Monday.

"Three bomb-laded drones carried out the attacks that hit the military targets accurately," the television quoted Houthi military spokesman Yehya Sarea as saying.

The attacks were launched on Sunday night, according to other Houthi online media.
