UAE arrests and deports Iranian journalist

16 Oct 2019; MEMO: Egyptian journalist Jamal Sultan revealed yesterday that the UAE had arrested an opposition Iranian journalist in Dubai and deported him to Tehran.

On Twitter, Sultan, the chief editor of Al-Mesryoon newspaper, wrote: “The UAE arrested an opposition Iranian journalist during a transit flight from France to Australia through Dubai. It handed him over to the Iranian authorities.”

Iraq deports 537 foreign children from Daesh families

17 Oct 2019; MEMO: The Iraqi Foreign Ministry yesterday announced that it had deported 64 children of Uzbek nationality, whose families belong to Daesh.

In a statement, the ministry said that the deportation of the children has been concluded with the participation of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Ministry of Justice and Security Services, and in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The children were handed over to the official authorities in their country.

Turkey rejects U.S. proposal for cease-fire with Kurdish forces in Syria

ANKARA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on late Tuesday rejected the offer of his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump for a cease-fire with the Syrian Kurdish fighters, but agreed to keep in dialogue with Washington.

Speaking to journalists on his way from Baku to Ankara, Erdogan said in a phone conversation with Trump, Trump proposed to mediate for a cease-fire between Turkey and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria and decided to send a delegation to Ankara for this bid.

Iran’s exports to neighbouring countries hit $24bn

15 Oct 2019; MEMO: The value of Iranian exports to neighbouring countries amounts to $24 billion, including $16 billion to Arab states, an official has reported.

Director General of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran’s Arab-African Office Masoud Kamali Ardakani said the main exports to Arab countries include foodstuff, minerals and petrochemicals, Fars News Agency reported.

Ex-Jerusalem Mayor Barkat wants to succeed Netanyahu as Likud leader

15 Oct 2019; MEMO: Former Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has declared that he sees himself as the best successor to Benjamin Netanyahu as Likud’s leader.

Speaking to Ynet, Barkat “for the first time declared himself as the heir to the Likud leadership when Benjamin Netanyahu ends his political life, and intends to run for prime minister as party leader.”

Egypt: Israa Abdelfattah strangled in custody

15 Oct 2019; MEMO: Egyptian activist Israa Abdelfattah, who was kidnapped from a street in Cairo over the weekend, has detailed how she was tortured and beaten in custody.

On Saturday Israa was abducted by plainclothes police officers from her car and taken away in a van to an undisclosed place of detention and banned from contacting family or lawyers.

Israel abducts Jerusalem governor and Fatah official in Jerusalem

15 Oct 2019; MEMO: In a dawn raid yesterday, Israeli soldiers abducted the Governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, and Fatah Secretary-General for the city, Shadi Mutwar, from their homes.

“The governor was arrested in a raid on his home in the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan,” the Palestinian Prisoners Society said in a statement.

Media sources said the soldiers assaulted Mutwar in front of his family before ransacking his home and violently searched Ghaith’s residence.
