Morocco court condemns 3 to death for decapitation of Scandinavian hikers

Three men have been convicted of terrorism and sentenced to death by a court in Morocco for the murder of two Scandinavian women on a hiking trip in the High Atlas Mountains.

Turkish, U.S. senior officials discuss U.S. removal from F-35 program

ANKARA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin held a conversation with U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton by phone on Thursday, discussing Turkey's exclusion from the F-35 fighter jet program.

During the call with Bolton, Kalin expressed Turkey's unease over Washington's decision, said a statement by Turkey's presidential office.

On Wednesday, the White House announced that it was removing Turkey out of the F-35 fighter jet program over Ankara's purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense systems.

Turkey launches air strike on Kurdish militants in northern Iraq after diplomat killed

ANKARA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Turkey launched an air attack Thursday on northern Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan in response to the killing of a Turkish diplomat in the region, according to a statement of the country's defense minister.

"Following the evil attack in Erbil, we have launched the most comprehensive air operation on Qandil and dealt a heavy blow to the (PKK) terror organisation," Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said in the statement.

Iran denies US destroyed an Iranian drone near Persian Gulf

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran is denying a U.S. warship destroyed an Iranian drone in the strategic Strait of Hormuz after it threatened the ship.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi tweeted on Friday: “We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else.”

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in New York for U.N. meetings, said there’s “no information about losing a drone.”

Bitcoin craze hits Iran as US sanctions squeeze weak economy

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranians feeling the squeeze from U.S. sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic’s ailing economy are increasingly turning to such digital currencies as Bitcoin to make money, prompting alarm in and out of the country.

In Iran, some government officials worry that the energy-hungry process of “mining” Bitcoin is abusing Iran’s system of subsidized electricity; in the United States, some observers have warned that cryptocurrencies could be used to bypass the Trump administration’s sanctions targeting Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.

Iran Will Not Allow Israel, U.S. To Threaten Region’s Security

BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 18 (NNN-NNA) – A senior Iranian diplomat, said that, Iran and its allies will not allow Israel and the United States to jeopardise the region’s security and stability.

“Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is making dangerous movements in the region, to gain popularity in his country. These movements and threats are not in the interest of the region,” Hossein Amir-abdollahian, special aide to Iranian President, Ali Larijani, said, during his meeting with House Speaker, Nabih Berri.

Turkey receives 15th shipment of S-400 hardware

18 July 2019; AA: Turkey continued on Thursday to receive components of Russian S-400 missile defense systems. 

Delivery of the long-range air defense hardware continued, with 15 shipments having so far landed at the Murted Air Base in the capital Ankara over the past week.

The first shipment was delivered last Friday.

Following protracted efforts to purchase an air defense system from the U.S. with no success, Ankara signed a contract in 2017 to purchase the S-400s from Russia.

Iran's Zarif says US diplomatic restrictions 'inhuman'

18 July 2019; DW: Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has blasted US travel restrictions on Iranian diplomats, describing them as "basically inhuman." He also accused Washington of "economic terrorism," targeting ordinary Iranian people.

Iran's top foreign policy official on Wednesday condemned tight travel restrictions on Iranian diplomats and their families living in Washington, claiming the curbs amounted to mistreatment.

UN envoy decries killing of Turkish diplomat in Iraq's Erbil

BAGHDAD, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) top envoy in Iraq on Wednesday strongly condemned the killing of a Turkish diplomat in an armed attack in Iraq's northern city of Erbil, urging for a thorough probe into the attack.

Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, said "this heinous attack cannot be justified under any circumstance and must be soundly condemned," according to a statement by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Sudan's military and opposition sign first part of power-sharing deal

17 July 2019; DW: Protesters and the ruling military inked a political declaration to end months of unrest. Both sides clashed over the east African country's future after President Omar al-Bashir was deposed three months ago.

Sudan's ruling military council and an alliance of opposition groups on Wednesday signed the first of two documents as part of a power-sharing deal that activists hope will pave the way for democracy in the east African country.
