Kim supervises N. Korean troops simulating attack on South

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a live-fire artillery drill simulating an attack on a South Korean airfield and called for his troops to be ready to respond to the enemies’ “frantic war preparation moves” — apparently referring to the recent series of military drills between the United States and South Korea.

Malaysia ex-PM Muhyiddin charged with corruption, laundering

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was charged Friday with corruption and money laundering, making him Malaysia’s second ex-leader to be indicted after leaving office.

Muhyiddin, 75, pleaded innocent to four charges of abusing his power to obtain 232.5 million ringgit ($51.4 million) bribes for his party and two charges of money laundering involving 195 million ringgit ($43 million). His party said he is expected to face an additional charge on Monday.

Xi awarded 3rd term as China’s president, extending rule

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping was awarded a third five-year term as the nation’s president Friday, putting him on track to stay in power for life at a time of severe economic challenges and rising tensions with the U.S. and others.

The endorsement of Xi’s appointment by the ceremonial National People’s Congress was a foregone conclusion for a leader who has sidelined potential rivals and filled the top ranks of the ruling Communist Party with his supporters since taking power in 2012.

North Korea launches short-range ballistic missile toward Yellow Sea — Yonhap

SEOUL, March 9. /TASS/: North Korea has launched one short-range ballistic missile toward the Yellow Sea, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Accroding to the agency’s information, the missile was launched at about 6:20 p.m. local time (12:20 a.m. Moscow time) from the Nampo area. "We are maintaining full readiness in close cooperation with the US. We’ve also stepped up surveillance and vigilance," the South Korean military said in a statement.

Malaysia’s Former PM Muhyiddin arrested, to be charged in court Friday

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), March 9 (NNN-Bernama) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was arrested Thursday and will be charged in a Kuala Lumpur court Friday.

MACC, in a statement, said Muhyiddin will be slapped with several charges under the MACC Act 2009 and Section 4(1)b of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).

Over 15,000 Cambodians die of tobacco-related illnesses annually: health expert

PHNOM PENH, March 9 (Xinhua) -- More than 15,000 people died of smoking every year in Cambodia, Mom Kong, executive director of the local non-government organization, the Cambodia Movement for Health, said on Thursday.

According to a recent survey by the Ministry of Health, there are an estimated 1.6 million adult cigarette smokers, or 13 percent of the kingdom's adults aged 15 years old and above, Kong said.

"The rate of adult cigarette smokers had dropped by 4 percent between 2014 and 2022," he told Xinhua.

Xi accuses US of trying to hold back China’s development

President Xi Jinping accused Washington this week of trying to isolate his country and hold back its development. That reflects the ruling Communist Party’s growing frustration that its pursuit of prosperity and global influence is threatened by U.S. restrictions on access to technology, its support for Taiwan and other moves seen by Beijing as hostile.

Report: Malaysian ex-PM Muhyiddin facing graft charges

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (AP) — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was grilled Thursday by anti-graft agency officials for a second time in a matter of weeks and reportedly will be charged over alleged corruption connected with awarding of government contracts while he was in office.

The agency chief, Azam Baki, told the national Bernama news agency that Muhyiddin, 75, will be charged in court Friday. He did not give details. The agency said it will issue a statement later in the day.

China’s Xi calls for ‘more quickly elevating’ armed forces

BEIJING (AP) — China’s leader Xi Jinping has called for “more quickly elevating the armed forces to world-class standards,” in a speech just days after a top diplomat warned of the growing possibility of conflict with the U.S. unless Washington changes course.

China must maximize its “national strategic capabilities” in a bid to “systematically upgrade the country’s overall strength to cope with strategic risks, safeguard strategic interests and realize strategic objectives,” Xi said Wednesday.
