SE Asian leaders do little to raise pressure on Myanmar

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Southeast Asian leaders did little to ramp up pressure on Myanmar to comply with their plan for peace, agreeing Friday to a course of action that largely kicks the matter down the road.

With violence in Myanmar spiraling out of control since the military seized power in 2021, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has been trying to implement a five-point plan for peace, so far with little effect.

Watches, daggers and cricket ice cream: Asian summit treats

BANGKOK (AP) — A custom wristwatch from Cambodian leader Hun Sen at the ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh, a foot-long dagger at the G-20 meetings in Bali, and cricket ice cream and Thai noodles with worm sauce at the APEC talks in Bangkok.

Japan: Former Tokyo Olympic Executive Indicted On New Charges

TOKYO, Nov 10 (NNN-NHK) – Tokyo prosecutors, yesterday indicted former Tokyo Olympic organising committee executive, Haruyuki Takahashi, on charges of receiving some 54 million yen (370,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes, from a major advertisement company, and a firm that sold stuffed dolls of the games’ mascots.

Japan drafts policy bracing for 8th wave of COVID-19 infections

TOKYO, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government on Thursday decided on a policy to allow each prefectural government to declare stepped-up coronavirus measures, amid growing concerns about the possible arrival of the eighth infection wave.

Japan's health ministry also decided at a meeting to revise the current five-scale alert of infection status to a four-scale one. A level similar to the seventh wave or higher will be rated as Level 3, which means infections continue to expand.

Ukraine boosts Southeast Asia ties with peace accord

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Ukraine signed a peace accord Thursday with Southeast Asian nations, a largely symbolic act that comes as Kyiv seeks to shore up international support in isolating Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba signed the “Treaty on Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia” as the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations got underway in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital.

Russia’s Putin won’t attend upcoming G-20 summit in Bali

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia next week, an Indonesian government official said Thursday, avoiding a possible confrontation with the United States and its allies over his war in Ukraine.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the chief of support for G-20 events, said Putin’s decision not to come was “the best for all of us.”

Pakistan’s govt, army providing strict security for Chinese projects: Zhao Lijian

BEIJING, Nov 9 (APP): The Pakistani government and army have been providing strict security protection to the Chinese projects, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday.

“We have worked in Pakistan for a long time. Based on my understanding, the Pakistani government and military there have been providing strict security protection for the Chinese projects,” he said during his regular briefing.

The spokesperson said that China and Pakistan had close communication and coordination over security matters.

S.Korea Reported 62,472 New COVID-19 Cases

SEOUL, Nov 9 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea reported 62,472 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 25,981,655, the health authorities said today.

The daily caseload was up from 62,273 in the previous day and higher than 54,737 tallied a week earlier, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

For the past week, the daily average number of new cases was 44,475.

Among the new cases, 42 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 70,221.

Philippines Revised GDP Growth To 7.5 Percent In Q2

MANILA, Nov 9 (NNN-PNA) – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), today revised its gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate, in the second quarter, to 7.5 percent from 7.4 percent. The PSA said, major contributors to the upward GDP revision were growth rates in construction, from 19 percent to 19.5 percent, real estate and ownership of dwellings, from 3.9 percent to 4.4 percent, and manufacturing, from 2.1 percent to 2.2 percent.

Inflation brings end to beloved 114-year-old Japanese candy

TOKYO, Nov 9 (Reuters) - A beloved Japanese candy eaten by generations, so iconic it even appeared in a hit anime film, has come to the end of the line, a victim of surging raw material and energy prices.

Tokyo-based Sakumaseika Co said on Wednesday that it would go out of business in January due to rising production costs, a labour shortage and a drop in sales of its main product "Sakuma's Drops".

The discontinuation of its trademark candy - hard, colourful fruit drops sold in a red steel can - threw Japan into mourning.
