Indonesia to complete 1st phase of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination by September

JAKARTA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia targets to complete the first phase of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination for livestock with 3 million doses of vaccines by September, said the country's spokesperson for FMD task force Friday.

"From June to July, 800,000 livestock were vaccinated and the number of FMD cases was sloping, this shows that vaccine is able to reduce the transmission rate," said the spokesperson Wiku Adisasmito.

Taiwan rejects China's 'one country, two systems' plan for the island

TAIPEI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan rejects the "one country, two systems" model proposed by Beijing in a white paper published this week, the self-ruled island's foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Only Taiwan's people can decide its future, ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou told a news conference in Taipei, the capital.

China was using U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei as an "excuse to create a new normality to intimidate Taiwan's people," Ou added.

South Korea, China clash over U.S. missile shield, complicating conciliation

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday renewed its threat to attack Taiwan following almost a week of war games near the island. Taiwan has called Beijing’s claim to the self-governing democracy “wishful thinking” and launched its own military exercises.

Petrol, diesel prices up around 3 pct in Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's petrol and diesel prices have risen some 3 percent from the prices a week earlier, before the central bank of Myanmar changed its reference exchange rates, official data showed Tuesday.

On Aug. 5, the central bank changed its reference exchange rates from 1,850 kyats to 2,100 kyats per U.S. dollar, 1,884.3 kyats to 2,148 kyats per euro and 273.81 kyats to 311.13 kyats per Chinese yuan.

9 dead, 7 missing in S.Korean heavy rainfall

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Nine people have been confirmed dead and seven others went missing as South Korea's capital Seoul and its surrounding areas were battered by heavy rainfall that started on Monday, Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday citing the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

Over 500 millimeters of rain fell in Seoul until Wednesday morning, while the western port city of Incheon, Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul, and Gangwon province next to Gyeonggi were also pounded by torrential rain.
