Killing stuns world that associates Japan with gun control

TOKYO (AP) — The assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in broad daylight Friday shocked a world that has come to associate Japan with relatively low crime and strict gun control.

Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, Abe was shot in the back while campaigning in the city of Nara for parliamentary candidates. He died at a hospital, two days before the election.

NARA, Japan (AP) — Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated Friday on a street in western Japan by a gunman who opened fire on him from behind as he delivered a campaign speech — an attack that stunned the nation with some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere.

The 67-year-old Abe, who was Japan’s longest-serving leader when he resigned in 2020, collapsed bleeding and was airlifted to a nearby hospital in Nara, although he was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later pronounced dead after receiving massive blood transfusions, officials said.

Saudi FM meets India counterpart in Indonesia

08 July 2022; MEMO: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud yesterday met with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The agency said the meeting took place in the Indonesian island of Bali, on the sidelines of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the G20 countries.

“Tibet affairs are China’s internal affairs which brooks no foreign interference. China is firmly against any engagement by official of any country with 14th Dalai Lama,”

Malaysia’s air passenger traffic hits 8.7 mln in Q1 2022, highest since pandemic began

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s total air passenger traffic improved to 8.7 million in the first quarter of this year (Q1 2022) — the highest since the start of the pandemic, said the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).

Due to the low base effect, passenger traffic grew 415.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) compared with -91.2 per cent y-o-y in the same quarter last year.

Malaysia, Turkiye to expedite completion of negotiations on MTFTA expansion

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia and Turkiye have committed to continue to work expeditiously to accelerate the completion of negotiations on the expansion of the Malaysia-Turkiye Free Trade Agreement (MTFTA) as soon as possible, says the Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade And Industry (MITI).

MITI said that included the commitment for concessions in respect of trade in services, e-commerce, and investment.

Russia joins G20 meeting overshadowed by Ukraine conflict

Heads of MI5, FBI give joint warning of growing threat from China

July 6 (Reuters) - The heads of MI5 and FBI warned of the growing long-term threat posed by China to UK and U.S. interests, in their first joint appearance on Wednesday.

MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said the service has already "more than doubled our previously-constrained effort against Chinese activity of concern," adding it was running seven times as many investigations as in 2018.

China's Chang'e-4 probe completes work for 44th lunar day

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have been switched to dormant mode for the lunar night after working stably for a 44th lunar day.

The lander was switched to dormant mode at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday (Beijing Time), and the rover, Yutu-2, at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.
