Chinese, overseas scholars condemn U.S. signing of "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act"

BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States' signing of the so-called "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act" into law was nothing but a political farce, said a law professor from China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at a press conference Thursday in Beijing.

The conference was held by the Xinjiang regional government, with Chinese and foreign scholars participating both online and offline.

China faces omicron test weeks ahead of Beijing Olympics

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Just weeks before hosting the Beijing Winter Olympics, China is battling multiple coronavirus outbreaks in half a dozen cities, with the one closest to the capital driven by the highly transmissible omicron variant.

With the success of the Games and China’s national dignity at stake, Beijing is doubling down on its “zero-tolerance” COVID-19 policy.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat Postponed — Malaysian FM

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Jan 12 (NNN-Bernama) — The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat scheduled for Jan 18 and 19 in Cambodia has been indefinitely postponed, said Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.

He said he was informed of the postponement on Wednesday after several ASEAN foreign ministers were unable to attend the meeting for certain reasons.

S.Korea authorises Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, imports Pfizer pills

SEOUL, Jan 12 (Reuters) - South Korea is turning to additional pharmaceutical tools as it looks to pre-empt a surge of COVID-19 omicron infections, authorising the use of Novavax Inc's vaccine on Wednesdayand preparing to distribute the first of Pfizer's antiviral pills.

At least 21,000 of Pfizer's (PFE.N) antiviral pills, called Paxlovid, will arrive in South Korea on Thursday, with another 10,000 more expected to arrive by the end of the month, the health ministry said.

Japan reports over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases, 1st time in 4 months

TOKYO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan confirmed more than 10,000 daily nationwide COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the first time since Sept. 9, 2021.

The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 2,198 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, doubling from 962 the previous day and logging the highest level in four months.

The infection case count in the capital increased by over five times from 390 the previous Wednesday, the first time to top 2,000 since Sept. 4, 2021.

China’s Tianjin orders more testing of 14 million residents

BEIJING (AP) — The northern Chinese city of Tianjin ordered a second round of COVID-19 testing of all 14 million residents Wednesday following the discovery of 97 cases of the omicron variant during initial screenings that began Sunday.

Residents were asked to remain where they are until the results of all the nucleic acid tests are received, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

North Korea claims successful test of hypersonic missile

Seoul, Jan 12 (AP) North Korea says leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a successful flight test of a hypersonic missile he claimed would remarkably increase the country's nuclear war deterrent.

The report by North Korean state media on Wednesday came a day after the militaries of the United States, South Korea and Japan said they detected North Korea firing a suspected ballistic missile into its eastern sea.

Kazakhstan’s Tokayev vows to present new package of political reforms in September

NUR-SULTAN, January 11. /TASS/: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that he will present a package of political reforms in September.

"In my next address [to the people] in September, I will present a new package of political reforms that will be prepared based on a wide an constructive dialogue with the public and experts," he told the lawmakers Tuesday.

The president noted that Kazakhstan "will continue its course towards political modernization."

"This is my principal position," he stated.
