SKorea sees record virus jump as thousands take college exam

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea reported its biggest daily jump in coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic as hundreds of thousands of masked students flocked to schools on Thursday for the country’s highly competitive college entrance exam amid growing concerns about the delta-driven spread.

About 509,000 students were taking the one-day exam at 1,395 sites across the nation, including hospitals and shelters.

Hate speech in Myanmar continues to thrive on Facebook

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Years after coming under scrutiny for contributing to ethnic and religious violence in Myanmar, Facebook still has problems detecting and moderating hate speech and misinformation on its platform in the Southeast Asian nation, internal documents viewed by The Associated Press show.

Three years ago, the company commissioned a report that found Facebook was used to “foment division and incite offline violence” in the country. It pledged to do better and developed several tools and policies to deal with hate speech.

Pakistan’s exports to China up 76% in first three quarters: Pakistani Consul General Shanghai

BEIJING, Nov 16 (APP): Pakistan Consul General, Shanghai, Hussain Haider said that 2021 has been an excellent year for Pakistan-China bilateral trade. Driven by China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement Phase, Pakistan exports to China have increased more than 76% year-on-year in the first three quarters despite the pandemic.

“We believe that by the end of this year, our exports to China will cross $3 billion and that will be one of our highest-ever exports to China,” he said in an interview with China Economic Net (CEN).

China says update of news-sources list meant to fix 'chaotic dissemination'

HONG KONG, Nov 16 (Reuters) - China's recent move to update an official list of internet news providers whose content may be reprinted by other sites is aimed at correcting a "chaotic dissemination" of news, a senior cyberspace regulator official said on Tuesday.

Xie Dengke, director of the Cyberspace Administration of China's network communication bureau, told a State Council news briefing that managing online news sources was crucial to maintaining a "clear cyberspace".

Duterte's daughter joins Marcos as running mate in Philippines presidential election

MANILA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter will be running mate of Ferdinand Marcos Jr in next year's presidential election, the two candidates said on Tuesday, confirming weeks of speculation of an alliance between two powerful families.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, 43, who is seeking the vice-presidency announced in a video message her intent to run on the same ticket as Marcos, the latest twist in the Philippines' political drama that has gripped the country.

India’s plan to deploy missile at China-India border to escalate tension: Chinese Observers

BEIJING, Nov 15 (APP): Chinese observers slammed the Indian government’s plan to deploy the BrahMos missile – its most advanced missile – at the India-China border, warning it would add new barriers in talks to peacefully address the border tension and further deteriorate ties.

However, they noted that the new weapon would be only of theoretical use while posing no actual threat to China’s security.

“This is why tension keeps rising along the China-India border and unwanted military conflicts broke out,” said Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert.

Philippine President Duterte to run for senator in 2022 elections

MANILA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday filed his certificate of candidacy for senator in the May 2022 elections.

Duterte, 76, sent his lawyer to the Commission on Elections to register on Monday, the last day for making candidate substitutions. He will run under political party Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS), rather than his ruling party PDP-Laban.

Last month, Duterte said that he was retiring from politics and will not run in the next elections "in obedience to the will of the people."

Malaysian pharmaceutical manufacturer exports localized Chinese vaccines to Myanmar

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian pharmaceutical company Pharmaniaga on Monday announced its entry into the vaccine export market, following the delivery of localized Chinese COVID-19 vaccines to Myanmar.

The initial order was some 200,000 doses of locally filled-and-finished CoronaVac vaccine to be delivered in several batches, manufactured by its wholly-owned subsidiary Pharmaniaga LifeScience Sdn Bhd (PLS) at its European Union certified high-tech plant. The first batch was delivered to Myanmar on Nov. 13, the company said in a statement.

USA: Washington should act responsibly in relations with China

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Washington has recently declared that the United States and China will "discuss ways to responsibly manage the competition" between the two sides.

Responsible management of what many deem as the world's most important bilateral relationship is certainly imperative. Yet it is worth noting that over the years, Washington is the one that has been acting irresponsibly to undermine its relations with Beijing.
