China: Huawei to roll out its own operating system to smartphones

HONG KONG (AP) — Huawei is launching its own HarmonyOS mobile operating system on its handsets as it adapts to losing access to Google mobile services two years ago after the U.S. put the Chinese telecommunications company on a trade blacklist.

Huawei was expected to announce the launch of HarmonyOS on Wednesday for various devices including smartphones and tablets.

Indonesia urges ASEAN to quickly appoint envoy for Myanmar

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s foreign minister on Wednesday urged the Association of Southeast Asia Nations to immediately appoint a special envoy on Myanmar in response to its military coup, and reiterated a call for the safety of civilians as the ruling junta cracks down on opposition.

After holding talks with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell in Jakarta, Retno Marsudi said Indonesia is continuing to communicate with the ASEAN chair and other member countries following their demand for an immediate end to killings and the release of political detainees in Myanmar.

PIA special plane airlifts batch of Sinopharm vaccine to Pakistan from China

BEIJING, Jun 1 (APP): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) special plane airlifted a batch of 500,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine from the Beijing Capital International Airport to Islamabad on Tuesday.

Another plane of the national flag carrier will transport another batch of 500,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine procured from China to Pakistan on Wednesday morning, Qadir Bux Sangi, PIA Country Manager for China told APP.

Last Sunday, a special flight PK6852 transported a consignment of 500,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine from Beijing to Islamabad.

2 Turkey firms to operate 3 Azerbaijan mines

01 June 2021; MEMO: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on Saturday to transfer the operations of the country's three mineral mines to two Turkish companies, Anadolu reports.

The Qasqacay, Elbeydas and Agduzdag mines were transferred for the purpose of study, research, exploration, development and exploitation based on a 30-year contract, the report said.

S’pore Reviews Data On Anaphylaxis For mRNA Covid-19 Vaccines

SINGAPORE, June 1 (NNN-Bernama) — Singapore is currently reviewing local and international safety data on vaccinating persons with a history of anaphylaxis (allergic reaction) due to food and other medicines, with a view to allowing this group to receive the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines safely.

In a statement late Monday, the republic’s Expert Committee on COVID-19 Vaccination said it intended to complete this review in the next two weeks.

China's central bank tries to stop surge in currency's value

Beijing, Jun 1 (AP-PTI) China's central bank is trying to restrain the surging exchange rate of its currency, temporarily backtracking in efforts to make the tightly controlled yuan more flexible and market-oriented.

On Monday, commercial lenders were ordered to hold more of their foreign currency as reserves in the central bank to limit sales after the yuan hit a four-year high of 6.3674 to the US dollar.

N.Korea's ruling party sets up new post under leader Kim -Yonhap

(Reuters) --- North Korea's ruling party has amended its rules to create a de facto second-in-command under leader Kim Jong Un as he looks to revamp domestic politics, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Tuesday.

Citing an unidentified source familiar with North Korea, the agency said the holder of the new post of "first secretary" would chair meetings on behalf of Kim Jong Un.

HK security dept annuls voting rights of Next Digital's imprisoned owner

(Reuters) --- Media publisher Next Digital Ltd (0282.HK) said on Tuesday Hong Kong's National Security Department confirmed its founder and controlling shareholder, jailed tycoon Jimmy Lai, must not exercise voting rights on shares held by him.

Lai, who owns a 71.26% stake in Next Digital, can only exercise voting rights under the authority of a license granted by the Secretary for Security, according to the Security Department.

Amid divisions, ASEAN leaders plan Myanmar visit this week

(Reuters) --- The chair and secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plan to travel to Myanmar this week even as the 10-nation bloc remains divided on how to respond to the military coup there, four diplomatic sources said.

ASEAN, a grouping that includes Myanmar and has a policy of non-interference in the affairs of members, has led the main diplomatic effort to resolve the violent turmoil gripping the country following the overthrow of a democratically-elected government four months ago.
