Super Typhoon Saola Affects Nearly 200,000 In Philippines

MANILA, Aug 30 (NNN-PNA) – Super typhoon Saola, triggered floods and landslides in seven regions in the Philippines, affecting nearly 200,000 people, the government said today.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said, at least one person was reported missing. No death has been reported, so far.

The disaster management agency said, Saola flooded 193 areas and triggered 12 landslides on the main Luzon island and the central Philippines. More than 35,000 of the displaced residents are still in temporary shelters.

US deploys B-1B bombers for separate drills with South Korea, Japan

SEOUL, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The United States separately deployed B-1B bombers for joint drills with South Korea and Japan on Wednesday, as the three allies have stepped up responses to threats from North Korea.

A U.S. B-1B flew alongside South Korean FA-50 jets and U.S. Air Force F-16 fighters as part of ongoing Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, South Korea's defence ministry said. It marked the 10th such flight by an American bomber this year.

U.S military in talks to develop port in Philippines facing Taiwan

MANILA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. military is in talks to develop a civilian port in the remote northernmost islands of the Philippines, the local governor and two other officials told Reuters, a move that would boost American access to strategically located islands facing Taiwan.

U.S. military involvement in the proposed port in the Batanes islands, less than 200 km (125 miles) from Taiwan, could stoke tensions at a time of growing friction with China and a drive by Washington to intensify its longstanding defence treaty engagement with the Philippines.

Japan's average gas prices hike to record high

TOKYO, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The average retail gasoline price in Japan climbed to a record high level by rising for the 15th consecutive week, industry ministry data showed Wednesday.

The national average price for regular gasoline as of Monday rose 1.9 yen from a week earlier to 185.6 yen (1.3 U.S. dollars) per liter, the highest level since comparable data became available in 1990, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

S. Korean opposition party rallies against Japan's nuke wastewater dumping

The lawmakers gathered in the square of a railway station in the country's southwest coastal city of Mokpo, shouting slogans of "We condemn Japan's dumping of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the ocean" together with citizens joining the demonstration.

BEIJING, Aug 29 (APP): Pakistan Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque underlined the role of canals as conduits of commerce, culture and connectivity.

He made these remarks while speaking at the Opening Ceremony of World Canal Cities Forum recently at Yangzhou city in Jiangsu province of China.
