China won’t require COVID-19 tests for incoming travelers in a milestone in its reopening

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China will no longer require a negative COVID-19 test result for incoming travelers starting Wednesday, a milestone in its reopening to the rest of the world after a three-year isolation that began with the country’s borders closing in March 2020.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced the change at a briefing in Beijing on Monday.

Saola Intensifies Into Super Typhoon, Affects Philippines

MANILA, Aug 27 (NNN-PNA) – Saola intensified into a super typhoon at dawn today, threatening to dump heavy rain and severe winds in the northern Philippines, the Philippine state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said, Saola could bring heavy rain in mountainous areas, which could trigger flooding and landslides.

Japan says seawater radioactivity below limits near Fukushima

TOKYO, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Tests of seawater near Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant have not detected any radioactivity, the environment ministry said on Sunday, days after authorities began discharging into the sea treated water used to cool damaged reactors.

Japan started releasing water from the wrecked Fukushima plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, sparking protests in Japan and neighbouring countries, in particular China, which banned aquatic product imports from Japan.

US Commerce chief seeks trade, tourism boost in China talks

BEIJING, Aug 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo arrived in Beijing late on Sunday for a four-day visit aimed at boosting business ties between the world's two largest economies while declaring American national security trade measures off-limits for debate.

"If you wanted to put a tagline to the trip and the mission, it’s protect what we must and promote where we can," Raimondo told reporters on Friday before departing for China. "I'm not going to pull my punches next week when I am there but I intend to be practical."

Philippines: China's 'aggressive behaviour' in South China Sea must be challenged, US Navy official says

MANILA, Aug 27 (Reuters) - China's "aggressive behaviour" in the South China Sea, including the use of water canon by its coast guard against a Philippine vessel, must be challenged and checked, the commander of the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet said on Sunday.

Vice Admiral Karl Thomas assured the Philippines of U.S. backing in the face of "shared challenges" in the region, saying: "My forces are out here for a reason."

China: 5.3-magnitude quake hits Northern Chile -- GFZ

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 jolted Northern Chile at 14:02:09 GMT on Wednesday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 100.7 km, was initially determined to be at 20.52 degrees south latitude and 69.24 degrees west longitude.

Myanmar police seize 6.6 kg of heroin in northern state

YANGON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar police have seized 6.6 kg of heroin worth over 160 million kyats (about 76,100 U.S. dollars) in the country's northern state of Kachin, said a release by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Sunday.

The seizure was made in the state's Mohnyin Township on Friday, said the committee.

On Saturday 182,000 stimulant tablets worth over 72 million kyats (about 34,200 dollars) were seized in an operation by anti-narcotics police who acted on a tip-off in eastern Myanmar's Shan state, it said.

S. Koreans rally against Japan's nuke wastewater dumping

SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of South Korean fishermen, activists and politicians held a protest rally in central Seoul on Saturday, condemning Japan's dumping of nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the ocean.

The participants shouted "Immediately stop dumping radioactive wastewater into the ocean" and "Japan must store nuclear-contaminated wastewater on its soil," urging the South Korean government to file a lawsuit with the International Tribunal against the Japanese government.

Japan: Fukushima residents are cautious after the wrecked nuclear plant began releasing treated wastewater

IWAKI, Japan (AP) — Fish auction prices at a port south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were mixed amid uncertainty over how seafood consumers will respond to the release of treated and diluted radioactive wastewater into the ocean.

The plant, which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, began sending the treated water into the Pacific on Thursday despite protests at home and in nearby countries that are adding political and diplomatic pressures to the economic worries.
