China approves a fourth COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, one that was developed by the head of its Center for Disease Control, adding to its arsenal.

Gao Fu, the head of China’s CDC, led the development of a protein subunit vaccine that was approved by regulators last week for emergency use, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Microbiology said in a statement Monday.

It is the fourth such vaccine to be given emergency use approval. China has approved four vaccines developed by three Chinese companies for general use.

Asia shares mostly higher after US stocks gain for fifth day

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly rose on Tuesday, cheered by a rally to all-time highs on Wall Street.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.6% to 29,953.97. South Korea’s Kospi added 0.3% to 3,054.77. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.1% to 6,846.20. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.5% to 28,971.04, while the Shanghai Composite inched down nearly 0.1% to 3,417.02.

Beijing cautions Kiev that China’s trade ties with Crimea should not be politicized

BEIJING, March 15./TASS/: China has urged Ukraine not to politicize cooperation between Chinese companies and Crimea, sustained according to market rules, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday.

"Chinese companies maintain contacts with Crimea and cooperate with it based on market principles. This commercial interaction should not be politicized," the spokesperson told a briefing commenting on Ukraine’s frustration over a recent visit by a Chinese delegation to Crimea.

Malaysian Govt Files Appeal Against Ruling On Use Of Word ‘Allah’

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (NNN-Bernama) — The government has filed an appeal against the High Court ruling that Christians nationwide can use the word “Allah” and three other Arabic words in their religious publications for educational purposes.

The other three words are Baitullah, Kaabah and solat.

The notice of appeal was filed at the High Court registrar’s office. Copies of the notice were given to the Court of Appeal registrar and the law firm representing a Sarawak Melanau Christian, Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill.

Thailand clears AstraZeneca use as potential side-effects divide Europe

BANGKOK/BELIN (Reuters) - Thailand announced plans on Monday to go ahead with AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and Germany said it would continue to administer the shot despite other countries suspending its use over safety fears.

Denmark and Norway have reported cases of bleeding, blood clots and a low platelet count, prompting Ireland and the Netherlands on Sunday to join them in announcing suspensions. On Monday Indonesia said it would also delay giving the vaccine.

Hong Kong court grants bail to three more activists in subversion case

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong’s High Court granted bail on Monday to three more activists in a case against 47 people accused of conspiracy to subvert the government after holding an informal 2020 poll to select candidates for legislative elections.

The case is being closely watched by foreign diplomats and rights groups concerned with the shrinking space for dissent in Hong Kong, which took an authoritarian turn with Beijing’s imposition of a sweeping national security law in June 2020.

WHO-China team suggests continuing to search early COVID-19 cases around the globe

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) and China joint team has suggested continuing to look for possible early cases in a wider range around the globe.

Liang Wannian, a member of the WHO-China joint team, made the remarks at a briefing to European diplomats on the origin of the novel coronavirus on Friday.

Asian shares mixed as China reports so-so economic data

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mixed in Asia on Monday as China reported a variety of data that painted a complicated picture of its recovery from the pandemic.

Benchmarks rose in Hong Kong and Tokyo but fell in Shanghai and South Korea.

The passage of a $1.9 trillion aid package for the U.S. economy has added to investor confidence that the U.S. and global economy will likely experience a strong recovery from the pandemic in the second half of the year but also potentially increase the rate of inflation.

Biden’s ministers visit Japan for talks focused on China

TOKYO (AP) — Concerns about China’s growing influence in the region is expected to be a main focus when two ministers of President Joe Biden’s administration visits Japan for their first in-person talks with their Japanese counterparts.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are on their way to Tokyo to meet their counterparts and other top officials as they try to reaffirm America’s commitment to the region and their alliance following Donald Trump’s temperamental approach.
