Chinese city reports coronavirus found on ice cream

BEIJING (AP) — The coronavirus was found on ice cream produced in eastern China, prompting a recall of cartons from the same batch, according to the government.

The Daqiaodao Food Co., Ltd. in Tianjin, adjacent to Beijing, was sealed and its employees were being tested for the coronavirus, a city government statement said. There was no indication anyone had contracted the virus from the ice cream.

Indonesian teams find more bodies, clear roads after quake

MAMUJU, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian rescuers retrieved more bodies from the rubble of homes and buildings toppled by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake, raising the death toll to 56 on Sunday, while military engineers managed to reopen ruptured roads to clear access for relief goods.

More heavy equipment reached the hardest-hit city of Mamuju and the neighboring district of Majene on Sulawesi island, where the quake hit Friday night, said Raditya Jati, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s spokesperson.

Power supply and phone communications also began to improve.

China suspended international flights of PIA, Air China, Turkish due to COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, Jan 16 (APP): The flights of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Air China, Turkish Airlines, Egypt Airlines and Sichuan Airlines to China were suspended by China’s civil aviation regulator after several passengers tested positive for COVID-19 during recent flights.

Pakistan International Airlines’ Islamabad-Xi’an flight PK854 will be suspended for four weeks starting January 18 after 10 passengers tested positive on the January 2 flight, according to an announcement of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

Sadyr Japarov wins 79.23% of votes in presidential election in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, January 16. /TASS/: Sadyr Japarov won 79.23% of the vote in the early presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan, the Central Election Commission reported on Saturday.

"79.23% of voters supported Japarov," the statement said, the turnout in the January 10 elections was 39.33%.

According to the CEC, the final voting protocols have been received from all 2,470 polling stations. "Now the results of the elections should be officially approved at a meeting of the Central Election Commission," the department told TASS.

China strips license of lawyer for Hong Kong activist

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A Chinese lawyer who represented a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist was stripped of his license amid efforts by Beijing to crush opposition to its tighter control over the territory.

Lu Siwei, who represented one of 12 Hong Kong activists who tried to flee to Taiwan, had his license revoked by the Sichuan Provincial Justice Department in a formal notice given Friday.

China builds hospital in 5 days after surge in virus cases

BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday finished building a 1,500-room hospital for COVID-19 patients in five days to fight a surge in infections in a city south of Beijing, state media reported.

The hospital is one of six with a total of 6,500 rooms being built in Nangong in Hebei province, the Xinhua News Agency said. All are due to be completed within the next week.

China, which largely contained the spread of the coronavirus, has suffered hundreds of infections this month in Nangong and the Hebei provincial capital of Shijiazhuang, southwest of the Chinese capital.
