Abiy Ahmed: 'Recent incident on Sudan border will not break our relations with Khartoum'

19 Dec 2020; MEMO: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Thursday that the "incident" involving a local militia on the border with Sudan "will not lead to a strained relationship with Khartoum."

The Ethiopian leader stated: "These incidents will not break the ties between our two countries because we are engaged in a permanent dialogue, that is our choice to settle problems," Ahmed tweeted.

Russian soldier killed in Nagorno-Karabakh by Mine planted by Armenian soldiers

19 Dec 2020; MEMO: A Russian soldier died after a mine planted by Armenian soldiers exploded in Nagorno-Karabakh, according to the country's Defence Ministry, Anadolu Agency reports.

In a statement, the ministry said the explosion occurred in the city of Shusha when Russian soldiers were clearing the area from mines.

A soldier was injured and later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital, said the statement.

It added that the soldier was on duty at Russia's International Mine Action Center.

China to begin COVID-19 inoculations with front-line workers

Beijing, Dec 19 (AP-PTI) China will soon begin coronavirus inoculations for workers in health care, transport and border control, a senior official said Saturday.

Vice Minister of the National Health Commission Zeng Yixin gave few specifics but said the government was prioritising those most at risk of catching the virus.

Workers in logistics and in markets selling fresh meat and seafood would also be placed higher on the list of those receiving vaccines, along with the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions.

China issues national security rules on foreign investment

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China published rules on Saturday for reviewing foreign investment on national security grounds, potentially broad measures that it insisted did not amount to protectionism.

The review system announced by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) covers foreign investments in military sectors and the acquisition of controlling stakes in such sectors as energy, natural resources, agriculture, internet technology and financial services.

China says tailed U.S. warship in Taiwan Strait

SHANGHAI/TAIPEI (Reuters) - China’s military tailed a U.S. warship as it passed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Saturday, the Chinese military said, denouncing such missions as sending “flirtatious glances” to supporters of Taiwan independence.

China, which claims democratically-run Taiwan as its own territory, has been angered by stepped-up U.S. support for the island, including arms sales and sailing warships through the Taiwan Strait, further souring Beijing-Washington relations.

China's Chang'e-5 retrieves 1,731 grams of moon samples

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Chang'e-5 probe retrieved about 1,731 grams of samples from the moon, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

At a ceremony on Saturday morning, Zhang Kejian, head of the CNSA, handed over the samples to Hou Jianguo, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the ceremony. He hailed the Chang'e-5 lunar mission as an important milestone in building China's strength in aerospace.

China says will keep policy support for economic recovery, no abrupt shift

BEIJING (Reuters) -China will maintain policy support for its economic recovery, avoiding a sudden shift in policy, to help keep economic growth within a reasonable range in 2021, the Xinhua news agency said on Friday, after a meeting of top leaders ended.

The annual Central Economic Work Conference, a gathering of top leaders and policymakers to chart the economy’s course in 2021, is being watched by investors amid speculation that Beijing would make policy changes amid accelerating growth, following a virus-induced slump earlier this year.
