Russia should prevent development of US-China conflict - Gorbachev

TOKYO, September 25. /TASS/: The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the confrontation between the United States and China, and Russia should diplomatically prevent the development of this conflict, former leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev said in an article published by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper on Friday.

Japan finance minister urges G7 to pressure China to abide by debt relief initiative

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Friday that China’s participation in a debt relief initiative dubbed “DSSI” was insufficient and that the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies must put more pressure on Beijing to abide by it.

Speaking to reporters after a G7 teleconference, Aso voiced the need to extend the debt relief programme for poor developing countries beyond its current year-end deadline.

Aso said the G7 finance chiefs also discussed responses to the coronavirus pandemic during the teleconference.

N. Korea’s Kim apologizes over shooting death of S. Korean

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un apologized Friday over the killing of a South Korea official near the rivals’ disputed sea boundary, saying he’s “very sorry” about the incident he called unexpected and unfortunate, South Korean officials said.

It’s extremely unusual for a North Korean leader to apologize to South Korea on any issue. Kim’s move could de-escalate tensions between the Koreas as it’s expected to ease anti-North sentiments in South Korea over the man’s death as well as mounting criticism of its liberal President Moon Jae-in.

PIA special flight airlifts 232 Pakistani citizens from Chengdu, China to Islamabad

BEIJING, Sep 24 (APP): A special flight – PK-8554 of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) carrying 232 Pakistani passengers left from Shuangliu International Airport, Chengdu, China to Islamabad on Thursday evening.

In view of the disruption of commercial flight operations, it was ninth special flight of the national flag carrier to transport Pakistani nationals from China to back home, according to Qadir Bux Sangi, PIA Country Manager for China.

All possible arrangements were made at the airport to facilitate the passengers of special flight, he told APP.

Ambassador Haque briefs China Investment Magazine delegation about CPEC’s current status

BEIJING, Sept 24 (APP): Pakistan Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque briefed a delegation of China Investment Magazine about Pakistan and China bilateral relations especially the current status of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which he termed as the flagship project of BRI and a strong symbol of China Pakistan strong ties.
The delegation led by China Investment Magazine Vice President Xiao Jingqiu met the Ambassador at the Embassy today.

Thai parliament delays decision on constitution changes

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s parliament voted on Thursday to delay making a decision on whether it will amend the constitution, as demanded by anti-government protesters who have demonstrated nearly every day for more than two months.

The parliament, dominated by supporters of the government, opted instead to set up a committee to study the process of the constitutional amendment first.

“The vote to accept a motion for constitutional changes is effectively delayed to November,” pro-government lawmaker Chinnaworn Boonyakiat told Reuters.

Japan's new PM Suga holds 1st phone conversation with South Korean president

TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga spoke with South Korean President Moon Jae-in via phone on Thursday, which was their first conversation since Suga took office last week.

In the talks that lasted about 20 minutes, Suga urged Moon to create an opportunity for the two countries to "return to a constructive relationship," according to a Japanese official who briefed reporters.

The official added that the two leaders agreed to work toward allowing business people to travel between the two countries amid COVID-19 restrictions.

Seoul: North Korea shoots SKorean official, burns his body

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea said Thursday North Korean troops shot a South Korean government official who may have attempted to defect and set his body on fire, after they found him on a floating object in waters near the rivals’ disputed sea boundary.

According to Seoul’s announcement, the man disappeared from a government ship that was checking on potential unauthorized fishing in an area south of the boundary on Monday, a day before he was found in North Korean waters.

Taiwan: China’s military flew planes toward island on 3 days

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan said Thursday that China sent two military surveillance planes toward the island for three straight days and it dispatched patrols in response.

Tensions have risen in the Taiwan Strait as the U.S. has stepped up its official engagement with the self-ruled island that China considers part of its national territory.
