China imports US$41.836 million worth of cotton yarn from Pakistan in August

BEIJING, Oct 2 (APP): China has imported US$ 41.836 million worth of cotton yarn from Pakistan in August, which is 4.36 times the US$ 9.592 million in the same period last year, with a year-on-year increase of 336 percent, as per data from China’s General Administration of Customs.

Vietnam says China military drills could harm maritime code talks

HANOI, Oct 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Vietnam said that military drills conducted this week by Beijing in the South China Sea will hurt negotiations on a regional maritime code of conduct (COC) for the disputed waters.

The exercises could complicate efforts to restart talks on a long-awaited code between China and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang told a regular briefing.

Philippine troops rescue man seized by suspected militants

ZAMBOANGA, Oct 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Philippine troops rescued a man who was held captive by suspected Abu Sayyaf militants after he managed to escape during a gunbattle, the military said.

Regional military commander Lt Gen Corleto Vinluan Jr said troops rescued Rex Triplitt on Wednesday after his abductors fled during the clash in the hinterlands of Sirawai town in southern Zamboanga del Norte province.

Triplitt was taken to a clinic in Sirawai for a checkup, he said.

Oil drops 4% after Trump's positive coronavirus test

TOKYO/LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices were down 4% on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump tested positive for COVID-19 and negotiators failed to agree a U.S. stimulus package just as rising global oil output threatens to overwhelm a weak price recovery.

Brent crude slipped on the Trump news and was down $1.67, or 4.1%, at $39.26 a barrel by 1038 GMT. U.S. oil was down $1.62, or 4.2%, at $37.10.

U.S. and Brent crude are heading for drops of around 8% and 6% respectively this week for a second consecutive week of declines.

JAPAN: Tokyo Stock Exchange resumes trading after technical outage

TOKYO (AP) — Tokyo Stock Exchange resumed normal operations Friday after repairs of malfunctions in its computer systems that halted trading for an entire day in the worst such outage ever.

The Nikkei 225 index jumped 0.7% to 23,354.51 shortly after opening following reports Japan is considering fresh stimulus for the economy.

There was no indication that the outage at the world’s third-largest exchange resulted from hacking or other cybersecurity breaches.

Malaysia: Ministry to investigate claims of forced labour by FGV

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Ministry of Human Resources will seek detailed information on the alleged use of forced labour by plantation company FGV Holdings Berhad (FGV) in its production process.

Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said thorough investigation will be carried out before any action is taken.

“Be patient. This (allegation) involves many quarters and it’s too early (to comment). I have to get more information first,” he told reporters after attending a leader-meets-people programme at Menara Manikavasagam here today.

Japan Eases Entry Restrictions For Medium-, Long-Term Staying Foreigners

TOKYO, Oct 1 (NNN-NHK) – Japan eased entry restrictions into the country from today, for foreigners around the world, put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19, although entry is still being refused for tourists.

These include foreign medical professionals, teachers and others, who are qualified for medium- or long-term stays for three months or longer, the government said, with those travelling for business purposes for less than three months also being eligible.
