Amnesty Report: Businesses supporting Myanmar abuses

(AP) — The overwhelming control of Myanmar’s economy by the military through some of its biggest companies means its foreign and domestic business partners are likely supporting military units and leaders suspected of human rights abuses, critics say.

A report by Amnesty International released Thursday details some of those links with Myanma Economic Holdings PLC a huge conglomerate that was set up by the military in 1990.

Asian stocks gain after Wall Street rebounds from tech slump

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets advanced Thursday after Wall Street rebounded from a three-day slump for tech stocks.

Benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul. Sydney was little-changed.

Wall Street’s S&P 500 index ended Wednesday up 2% for its best day in three months.

Investors were snapping up lower-priced shares and were encouraged by hopes of possible additional stimulus from the European Central Bank, analysts said. But they warned the recovery was fragile.

More Indians in Singapore returning home due to job losses

Singapore, Sep 9 (PTI) More and more Indian workers are returning home as Singapore businesses cut down on workforce following the severe impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, an official said.

"On an average, about 100 Indian nationals in Singapore continue to register daily with the High Commission here for flights back home, with over 11,000 having registered so far," Indian High Commissioner P Kumaran said on Wednesday.

Chinese FM: Indian troops fired first in border area

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tuesday that Indian troops fired first after illegally crossing the line and China has lodged solemn representations to the Indian side.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to a question on the latest China-India border situation.

China is host to the 2022 Winter Olympics with rumblings of a boycott and calls to move the games from Beijing because of alleged human rights violations.

North Korea’s Kim urges quick recovery from typhoon damage

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for urgent efforts to rebuild thousands of homes and other structures destroyed by a typhoon that slammed the country’s eastern region last week, state media said Wednesday.

Kim during the Workers’ Party meeting Tuesday also said the damage from Typhoon Maysak has forced the country to reconsider unspecified year-end projects, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said.
