DPRK’s Ruling Party Holds Meeting On New Department

PYONGYANG, Aug 6 (NNN-KCNA) – Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), presided over a meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) yesterday, to establish a new division and improve the party’s functions, official media reported today.

The Fourth Meeting of the Executive Policy Council of the Seventh WPK Central Committee, discussed the issue of setting up a new department within the Central Committee, and ways to improve the party’s personnel affairs system. It did not give further details about the new department.

South Korea searches for rescue workers missing in floods

SEOUL (Reuters) - A massive search was under way in South Korea on Thursday for five rescue workers swept over a dam when their boats overturned in surging floodwaters, while President Moon Jae-in raised concerns about North Korea releasing excess water without notification.

Parts of South Korea have seen 44 consecutive days of rain, the longest monsoon since 2013, and continued showers across the Korean peninsula are threatening to bring new floods and landslides.

China threatens countermeasures as Taiwan prepares for U.S. visit

BEIJING/TAIPEI (Reuters) - China on Thursday threatened to take countermeasures over a trip to Taiwan by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, as the Chinese-claimed island geared up for its highest-level U.S. official visit in four decades.

The visit, which begins on Sunday, adds to tensions between Beijing and Washington over everything from trade and human rights to the novel coronavirus pandemic. China calls Taiwan the most sensitive and important issue in its bilateral ties with the United States.

China sentences 3rd Canadian to death on drug charges

BEIJING (AP) — China has sentenced a third Canadian citizen to death on drug charges amid a steep decline in relations between the two countries.

The Guangzhou Municipal Intermediate Court announced Xu Weihong’s penalty on Thursday and said an alleged accomplice, Wen Guanxiong, had been given a life sentence.

Death sentences are automatically referred to China’s highest court for review.

Asian shares mixed as US talks on stimulus still stalled

(AP) --- Stocks were mixed in Asia on Thursday despite strong gains overnight on Wall Street, where the rally just kept on rolling.

Investors are watching to see if lawmakers will come ahead with fresh stimulus for the U.S. economy.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index shed 0.4% to 22,438.61 while the Shanghai Composite index gave up 0.3% to 3,367.65. Hong Kong lost 1.2% to 24,779.07. South Korea’s Kospi added 1% to 2,333.86 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.7% to 6,043.00.

N. Korea’s escalating virus response raises fear of outbreak

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea is quarantining thousands of people and shipping food and other aid to a southern city locked down over coronavirus worries, officials said, as the country’s response to a suspected case reinforces doubt about its longstanding claim to be virus-free.
