Myanmar Postpones Panglong Peace Conference To Third Week Of Aug

YANGON, Aug 2 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar postponed the fourth meeting of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference, to the third week of this month, a senior official told media on Saturday.

“The peace conference will be held on Aug 19, 20 and 21. We can’t postpone the date anymore, as there will be a campaign period of political parties for the upcoming general election soon,” said U Zaw Htay, spokesperson of the President’s Office.

Thai army suspends U.S. training plans after soldiers contract COVID-19

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand has suspended plans for its army to undertake joint training with the U.S. military after nine Thai soldiers tested positive for coronavirus upon returning from Hawaii, the defence ministry said on Sunday.

The Thai Army said the infected soldiers were among 151 Thai officers who had returned from Lightning Forge 2020 training with U.S. soldiers in Hawaii for the first three weeks of July.

China sends team to Hong Kong to do widespread coronavirus testing

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Seven Chinese health officials were due to arrive in Hong Kong on Sunday, the first members of a 60-person team that will carry out widespread testing for COVID-19 in the territory as the global financial hub races to halt a third wave of illness.

China’s National Health Commission on Saturday announced their scheduled arrival.

Turkish F-16s arrive in Azerbaijan for joint drill

31 July 2020; MEMO: Turkish F-16 fighter jets have arrived in Azerbaijan for joint military exercises, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said on Friday.

In a statement, the ministry said the jets will take part in the TurAz Qartali-2020 Joint Exercises, which began on Wednesday.

The drill, involving jets and helicopters, will continue in the capital Baku as well as Nakhchivan, Ganja, Kurdamir, and Yevlakh until Aug. 10.

Pacifist Japan ruling party proposes strike capability to halt missile attacks

TOKYO (Reuters) - Pacifist Japan took a step closer to acquiring weapons able to strike North Korea on Friday after a ruling party committee approved proposals to consider acquiring strike capability to halt ballistic missile attacks.

Giving long-range munitions to Japan’s Self Defence Forces is a controversial issue for a country that renounced the right to wage war after its defeat in World War Two. The proposal is also likely to anger China and Russia, which could fall within range of any new strike weapons.

Hong Kong leader says key election postponed, blow to pro-democracy camp

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Friday postponed a Sept. 6 election for seats in the city legislature for a year because of a spike in novel coronavirus cases, dealing a blow to the pro-democracy opposition hoping to make gains in the vote.

The opposition was hoping to win a historic majority in the Legislative Council, where only half the seats are directly elected and the other half filled mostly by pro-Beijing appointees.

China’s manufacturing improves in July, exports strengthen

BEIJING (AP) — China’s manufacturing activity edged up in July and export orders strengthened despite weak U.S. and European demand, a survey showed Friday, in fresh signs the world’s second-largest economy is gradually recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.

The monthly purchasing managers’ index issued by the Chinese statistics bureau and an industry group rose to 51.1 from June’s 50.9 on a 100-point scale. Numbers above 50 show activity increasing.

One Dead, 17 Injured In Blast In Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture

TOKYO, July 30 (NNN-NHK) – One person has died and at least 17 others have been injured, in an explosion this morning, at a restaurant in Koriyama City, in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, fire department officials said.

Investigators said, the explosion occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m. local time, at a “shabu shabu”-style hot pot restaurant.

Police and fire department officials, said that, one body was recovered from the site, with two people seriously injured in the explosion, while 15 others suffered slight injuries.

Philippines: ADB Approves 20 Million USD Grant To Help Samoa Respond To COVID-19

MANILA, July 30 (NNN-PNA) – Asian Development Bank (ADB), today said, it has approved a 20-million-U.S. dollar grant, to help the government of Samoa respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Manila-based bank said, the grant will help fund measures to upgrade Samoa’s health sector and support the government’s economic stimulus programme.
