Rapid daily nucleic acid test bolsters Beijing's fight against epidemic

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- In order to timely assess COVID-19 patients for early isolation and treatment, large-scale nucleic acid testing was conducted in Beijing, putting pressure on testing institutions with the rapid rise of samples.

Local hospitals are improving their testing capacity.

After 48 hours of renovation, a new nucleic acid testing laboratory in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital started operations.

China launches satellite for space environment study

JIUQUAN, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China successfully sent a satellite for space environment study and related technology experiments into the planned orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Sunday.

The satellite, the second of the Shiyan-6 series, was launched by a Long March-2D carrier rocket at 7:44 a.m. (Beijing Time), according to the center.

Sunday's launch was the 338th by the Long March rocket series.

Tokyo governor favored to win reelection for handling virus

TOKYO (AP) — Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike is poised to be reelected in Sunday’s polls, buoyed by public support for her coronavirus handling despite a recent rise in infections that has raised concerns of a resurgence of the disease.

The first woman to head the Japanese capital, Koike. 67, is also viewed as a potential candidate to succeed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe when his term ends in September 2021. Heavy rain floods southern Japan, leaving over dozen missing

Tokyo, Jul 4 (AP/PTI) Heavy rain in southern Japan triggered flooding and mudslides on Saturday, leaving more than a dozen missing and others stranded on rooftops waiting to be rescued.

More than 75,000 residents in the southern prefectures of Kumamoto and Kagoshima were asked to evacuate following pounding rains overnight.

About 40,000 Litres Of Oil Spill After Power Barge Explosion In Central Philippines

MANILA, July 4 (NNN-PNA) – Approximately 40,000 litres of oil spilled into the waters, off the central Philippines’ Lapuz town in Iloilo City, after an explosion rocked a power barge on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said, one of the four oil tanks of the power barge, which contained some 48,000 litres of oil, exploded around 3.00 p.m. and spilled around 40,000 litres into the sea.

Hong Kong officials disappointed at Canada's move to suspend extradition pact
