India: Flying squads to conduct door-to-door survey in Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 31 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said flying squads have been set up in all 227 municipal wards of Mumbai for door-to-door survey as part of efforts to check the spread of coronavirus.

The step has been taken in view of the high density of population in Mumbai where there is more possibility of spread of the disease compared to other districts.

India: 60 prisoners released from Akola jail to reduce crowding

Akola, Mar 31 (PTI) As many as 60 prisoners were released on bail from Akola district jail, in accordance with the Supreme Court's order to reduce crowding in prisons during the coronavirus outbreak, an official said on Tuesday.

At least 60 prisoners, who were serving sentences of upto seven years, were released following a health check-up on Monday, Akola jail superintendent A S Sadaphule said.

Mumbai, Mar 30 (PTI) Equity benchmark Sensex plummeted over 1,375 points on Monday, tracking heavy losses in banking and auto stocks, amid an unsettling spike in Covid-19 cases.

After plunging over 1,500 points during the day, the 30-share BSE barometer ended 1,375.27 points or 4.61 per cent lower at 28,440.32.

India: 'Will take care of migrant labourers, don't leave Maha'

Mumbai, Mar 29 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday assured that his government will take care of all migrant labourers and provide them basic necessities like food and water.

The 'Shiv Bhojan' scheme offering meal at Rs 10 will now be available at Rs 5 from April 1, he said in a webcast.

Mumbai, Mar 27 (PTI) Prominent Bollywood actors and filmmakers have reacted angrily to reports of alleged police excesses in various parts of country amid the lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic.

The country is witnessing a 21-day lockdown, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to contain the spread of the virus, which has claimed the lives of over 20,000 people globally.

India: Maha corona tally now 160 as seven more test positive

Mumbai/Nagpur, Mar 28 (PTI) With seven more persons testing positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra, the total number of such cases in the state has gone up to 160, officials said on Saturday.

Of these seven new COVID-19 patients, five are from Mumbai and two from Nagpur, health department officials said.

On Friday, 28 persons were found infected with coronavirus in different parts of the state, they said.

In Nagpur, both the new patients, including a girl, are close contacts of the person, who had tested positive on Thursday, the district officials said.

India: Maha govt mulls insurance for staff treating COVID-19 patients

Mumbai, Mar 27 (PTI) Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Friday said the state government is considering to provide insurance cover to the medical staff treating COVID-19 patients in the state.

In a Facebook live, Tope said apart from the insurance cover, the government also plans to give monetary incentive to the staff.

India: 11,000 prisoners in Maharashtra to get parole

Mumbai, Mar 26 (PTI) Some 11,000 prisoners in Maharashtra, including those whose sentence period is less than seven years, will be released on parole for 45 days to reduce crowding and avoid spread of coronavirus in jails, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Thursday.

He made the announcement through an official tweet from his handle @AnilDeshmukhNCP.
