Only PM should present Poland's EU stance, says president's top aide

WARSAW (Reuters) - Nobody other than the prime minister should communicate Poland’s position on its European Union budget veto, the president’s chief of staff said in an interview published on Sunday, amid conflicting signals from members of government on the issue.

Poland and Hungary are blocking the EU’s 1.8 trillion euro 2021-2027 budget and recovery fund over a proposal to link funds to respect for the rule of law, a dispute which threatens the stability of Poland’s ruling coalition.

Tusk says Trump, Kaczynski behave like 'bad-tempered brats'

WARSAW (Reuters) - Former European Council President Donald Tusk has compared both Donald Trump and the leader of Poland’s ruling party to “bad-tempered brats” who use lies and conflict to stay in power.

Tusk, a former Polish prime minister who now heads the main centre-right grouping in the European Parliament, said Kaczynski and Trump used similar strategies of dividing society and using propaganda to keep their hold on power.

Poland's total number of coronavirus cases exceeds 100,000

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland’s total number of coronavirus cases passed the 100,000 mark on Sunday, according to the health ministry’s Twitter account, as infection rates surge in the country which has reported daily records three times in the past week.

While Poland’s total number of cases remains well below that in many western European virus hotspots, reaching 100,000 illustrates how the spread of COVID-19 has accelerated in a country which avoided the worst of the first wave and where in July the prime minister played down risks ahead of an election.

Poland's ruling nationalists cement new coalition deal

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland’s ruling nationalists signed a new coalition agreement on Saturday, ending weeks of in-fighting in the three-party alliance over how it will govern over the next three years.

The leaders of the Law and Justice (PiS) party and the smaller conservative United Poland and Accord groups signed the deal at PiS headquarters in Warsaw on Saturday but gave no details on how the coalition will work in practice.

Polish ruling coalition has a future, says junior partner amid squabbles

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland’s ruling right-wing coalition should remain united, the leader of a junior partner in the alliance said on Monday, attempting to smooth tensions that threaten to wreck the government and trigger a snap election.

Zbigniew Ziobro, who is also Poland’s justice minister, spoke as leaders of the largest party in the coalition, Law and Justice (PiS), held an emergency meeting that lawmakers say could end in a split amid policy disagreements.

Belarusian ambassador summoned by Polish Foreign Ministry

WARSAW, August 27. /TASS/: Belarusian Ambassador to Poland Vladimir Chushev has been summoned by the Polish Foreign Ministry over the statements made by Belarusian officials regarding Warsaw, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz informed.

"Due to repeated baseless accusations by Belarusian officials against Poland, today at 15:00 [16:00 Moscow time] the ambassador of the Republic of Belarus has been summoned by the Polish Foreign Ministry," he wrote on Twitter.

Tsikhanouskaya hopes dialogue with Belarusian authorities will start soon

WARSAW (Reuters) - Belarusian opposition presidential candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who has led the biggest challenge to Alexander Lukashenko’s 26-year rule, hopes a dialogue with the authorities will start soon, she told Polish Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

Belarus is facing its biggest political crisis since the breakup of the Soviet Union, with tens of thousands of demonstrators rejecting Lukashenko’s victory in an Aug. 9 vote his opponents say was rigged.

Pompeo inks deal to support more US troops in Poland

WARSAW (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sealed a defense cooperation deal Saturday with Polish officials that will pave the way to deploy more American troops to Poland.

Pompeo, in Warsaw at the end of a four-nation tour of central and eastern Europe, signed the deal with Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak that sets out the legal framework for the additional troops.

Pompeo meets Polish leaders, signs defense pact, discusses Belarus

WARSAW (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw on Saturday where the two discussed a new defense agreement and their support for the people of Belarus.

Pompeo and Morawiecki also discussed the COVID-19 pandemic, securing 5G networks and a new bilateral agreement to cooperate in the development of Poland’s civil nuclear power program, a State Department spokeswoman said.
