Sudan war enters 100th day as mediation attempts fail

July 23 (Reuters) - Clashes flared in parts of Sudan on the 100th day of the war on Sunday as mediation attempts by regional and international powers fail to find a path out of an increasingly intractable conflict.

The fighting broke out on April 15 as the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) vied for power, since when more than 3 million people have been uprooted, including more than 700,000 who have fled to neighbouring countries.

Some 1,136 people have been killed, according to the health ministry, though officials believe the number is higher.

Sudanese Army accuses Rapid Support Forces of targeting hospital, killing 5

16 July 2023; MEMO: The Sudanese Army on Saturday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of targeting a hospital and killing five people, reports Anadolu Agency.

"Continuing their violation of international humanitarian law and all norms of war, rebel militias targeted the emergency room of the military hospital in Omdurman with a drone today, killing five patients and injuring 22, mostly civilians," said the military in a statement.

Sudan condemns Israeli raid on Jenin refugee camp in West Bank

KHARTOUM, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday condemned "in the strongest terms" the Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

The ministry denounced in a statement Israel's excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians, while urging the international community and the United Nations Security Council "to shoulder their responsibilities and enforce relevant resolutions to end the continued Israeli terrorism and protect the Palestinian people."

Sudan army head calls on young men to join fight against paramilitary RSF

28 June 2023; MEMO: The head of Sudan's army called on young men to defend their country, including by joining the army, and announced a ceasefire for the Eid al Adha holiday on Wednesday, when a rival force has also declared a truce, reports Reuters.

Multiple ceasefire deals have failed to stick in the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that began April 15, including several brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States at talks in Jeddah that were suspended last week.

3,000 killed in Sudan fighting, 2.2m displaced

26 June 2023; MEMO: Armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated yesterday in the southern area of the country's capital city of Khartoum, Anadolu Agency reported.

Eyewitnesses told the news wire that neighbourhoods in southern Khartoum witnessed violent clashes with light and heavy weapons yesterday morning.

International donors pledge $1.5bn in Sudan aid

19 June 2023; MEMO: International donors, on Monday, pledged close to $1.5 billion in humanitarian aid to Sudan and the broader region, responding to a call by the United Nations to boost aid amid a conflict that has forced some 2.2 million people from their homes, Reuters reports.

The United Nations said $3 billion was needed this year for humanitarian relief inside Sudan and for refugees fleeing the country, only a fraction of which had been funded.

Sudan: 2.2m people displaced by conflict, says UN

15 June 2023; MEMO: More than 2.2 million people have been displaced in Sudan since the outbreak of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, Anadolu reported on Wednesday.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, the records show that 1,670,991 people have been displaced internally and 528,147 have fled to neighbouring countries.

Sudan's army chief backs any solution to end conflict

10 June 2023; MEMO: Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said Saturday he supports any solution to end the current military conflict in the country, Anadolu reports.

Nearly 1,000 people have been killed and thousands injured in clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group since April 15, according to medics.
