USA: Grim blame game over COVID deaths in besieged nursing homes

WASHINGTON (AP) — A grim blame game with partisan overtones is breaking out over COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents, a tiny slice of the population that represents a shockingly high proportion of Americans who have perished in the pandemic.

The Trump administration has been pointing to a segment of the industry — facilities with low federal ratings for infection control — and to some Democratic governors who required nursing homes to take recovering coronavirus patients.

UN health experts voice concern about coronavirus’ indirect effects on women, youth

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 14 (APP): World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern about the impact of coronavirus on women, children and young people, as the pandemic continues to escalate.

“The indirect effects of COVID-19 on these groups may be greater than the number of deaths due to the virus itself”, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual new briefing in Geneva.

The pandemic has overwhelmed health systems in many parts of the world, which means women may be at greater risk of dying from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, WHO said.

US COVID-19 survivor receives $1.1 mn hospital bill

14 June 2020; AFP: A 70-year-old American man who nearly died of COVID-19 has been billed a heart-stopping $1.1 million for his hospital expenses, the Seattle Times reported Saturday.

Michael Flor was admitted to a hospital in the northwestern city on March 4, and stayed for 62 days -- at one point coming so close to death that nurses held up the phone so his wife and children could say goodbye.

Venezuela demands release of businessman connected to Maduro

MIAMI (AP) — Venezuela on Saturday demanded the release of a government-connected businessman who was detained in Cape Verde on U.S. corruption charges, calling his arrest an illegal act of aggression by the Trump administration aimed at piling new hardships on the crisis-wracked oil nation.
