USA: Families urge legal changes to prevent more police killings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Parents and siblings of Black men killed by police urged people during a discussion in the city where George Floyd was killed a year ago to join them in pursuing legal changes they say can make similar deaths less likely in the future.

The panel, convened Monday in Minneapolis and organized by the George Floyd Memorial Foundation founded by Floyd’s sister Bridgett and moderated by prominent Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, was part of a series of events marking the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death on May 25.

LOS ANGELES, May 24 (NNN-XINHUA) – California, the most populous state in the United States, announced plans to fully reopen its economy on June 15, amid dropping cases and vaccine eligibility expansion.

Beginning on June 15, almost all industry and business sectors may return to usual operations, with no capacity limits or physical distancing requirements, according to the updated guidelines, unveiled by the California Department of Public Health.

USA: George Floyd's family holds rally, march in brother's memory

Minneapolis (US), May 24 (AP-PTI) Members of George Floyd's family, and others who lost loved ones to police encounters, joined activists and citizens in Minneapolis on Sunday for a march that was one of several events planned nationwide to mark the one-year anniversary of Floyd's death.

Hundreds of people gathered for the rally in front of the courthouse in downtown Minneapolis where the Chauvin trial concluded a month ago, many carrying signs with pictures of Floyd, Philando Castile and other Black men killed by police.

Indian EAM Jaishankar arrives in New York

New York, May 24 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived here Sunday on his first visit to the US after India entered the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member in January this year and is expected to meet UN chief Antonio Guterres and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Jaishankar is expected to meet the UN Secretary General on Tuesday morning and will visit Washington DC where he will meet Blinken.

It is the first visit by a senior Indian minister to the US after President Joe Biden assumed office in January.

US restricting visas, taking other action over Tigray crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has begun restricting visas for people undermining efforts to resolve the deadly fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, saying it is time for the international community to take action in a conflict that has sparked allegations of ethnic cleansing and fears of famine.

USA: National Guard mission to provide security ending at Capitol

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly five months after being deployed to the U.S. Capitol to help quell the Jan. 6 insurrection, National Guard troops were set to leave and turn over security of the area to Capitol Police.

Guard troops, their mission ending Sunday, were expected to be leaving on Monday, a person familiar with the plan told The Associated Press. The person was not authorized to discuss the plan by name and requested anonymity.

The Pentagon announced earlier in the week that an extension of the Guard presence — 2,149 troops — had not been requested.

UN Security Council calls for ‘full adherence’ to Gaza cease-fire; focus on two-State solution

UNITED NATIONS, May 23 (APP): The United Nations Security Council has called for the “full adherence” to a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian fighters in the bombs-battered Gaza Strip.

The 15-member council reached the required full consensus Saturday afternoon to issue an official statement after earlier attempts at a shared declaration were blocked by the United States during the 11-day conflict in which 242 Palestinians killed, including 23 girls, 43 boys, 38 women and 138 men.

US again extending temporary protected status for Haitians

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is allowing eligible Haitian nationals residing in the U.S. to apply for a new 18-month designation for temporary protected status, reversing a Trump administration effort that had sought to end the special consideration.

In a statement Saturday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas cited security concerns, social unrest, an increase in human rights abuses, crippling poverty and other problems in Haiti for the decision.
