South Sudan vice-president and wife ‘recovers from coronavirus’

JUBA, June 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South Sudan’s First Vice-President Riek Machar and his wife, Defence Minister Angelina Teny, have recovered from Covid-19.

The two tested positive for Coronavirus three weeks ago.

The Sudan Tribune newspaper quoted a statement from Machar’s office as saying that he had been discharged on Saturday “having fully recovered”.

Madagascar minister fired over $2m lollipop order

ANTANANARIVO, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Madagascar’s education minister has been fired over plans to order more than $2m worth of sweets for schoolchildren.

Rijasoa Andriamanana said pupils would be given three lollipops each to mask the “bitter” aftertaste of an untested herbal remedy for coronavirus.

The plan was called off after objections from Madagascar’s president.

President Andry Rajoelina is promoting the herbal tonic Covid-Organics as a coronavirus cure.

Dozens survive deadly shipwreck off Mozambique coast

MAPUTO, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Twelve people were reported to have died, including several children, when a boat sank in the bay of Pemba off northern Mozambique.

Thirty-five people survived after swimming ashore on Wednesday.

But they were then apprehended by the police on suspicion that they could be recruits to a militant group that has been mounting attacks in Cabo Delgado province.

A new report by the UN says displacement of Mozambique’s civilian population has risen rapidly in recent months as the militants have stepped up their attacks.

Mali vows to investigate after army accused of deadly village attack

BAMAKO, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mali pledged to investigate claims that the army killed dozens of civilians in its conflict-riven centre, as complaints about the military’s conduct in the West African nation escalate.

Some 30 people were killed and a village burnt in the region, officials said, but it was unclear who was behind the latest violence.

Friday’s attack targeted a Fulani village named Binedama in the volatile Mopti region, said Aly Barry, an official from Tabital Pulaaku, a Fulani association.

Senegal eases coronavirus curfew after protests

DAKAR, June 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Senegal has announced it will ease a curfew and lift restrictions on inter-city travel following two nights of protests.

More than 200 people have been detained for questioning by police following spontaneous demonstrations in towns across the country overnight.

The protesters had been demanding an end to the curfew introduced in March to fight the pandemic.

Interior Minister Aly Ngouille Ndiaye said that the start of the curfew would be pushed back by two hours and now run from 23:00 to 05:00 local time.

Nelson Mandela Foundation calls for end to "structural violence" against black people in U.S.

CAPE TOWN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Nelson Mandela Foundation on Thursday condemned police brutality against the black people in the United States, where the death of African American George Floyd has set off turbulent mass protests.

"More than 1,000 Black people die at the hands of police in the U.S. every year," the foundation said, adding "mass incarceration, predictive policing, targeted surveillance and a host of other tools render Black lives more vulnerable than all others."

Senegal postpones school restart after teachers test positive for coronavirus

DAKAR, June 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Senegal has postponed the restart of schools until further notice after several teachers tested positive for the new coronavirus, the education ministry said.

The government announced on May 20 that schools would gradually resume on Tuesday June 2, after weeks of shutdown due to the pandemic. Senegal has recorded 3,739 positive COVID-19 cases since the start of the outbreak, with 43 deaths.

South Africa: Court rules some corona lockdown restrictions invalid

PRETORIA, June 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) - A South African high court declared some of the government’s coronavirus lockdown regulations unconstitutional but suspended the order for 14 days, leaving the rules in place for now.

South Africa introduced in March one of the world’s most restrictive COVID-19 lockdowns – including a ban on alcohol and cigarette sales – but has gradually eased restrictions down to the third of five levels.

Japan has no position yet on Trump's plan to expand G7 summit

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan has not yet established its position on a U.S. proposal for adding countries to the Group of Seven summit to be held later this year, Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Wednesday.

Aso told reporters after a conference call with his G7 counterparts that he could not comment on what other countries said at the meeting when asked whether G7 ministers took up the issue during the call.
