Uganda health workers say they lack vital equipment to fight COVID-19

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Ugandan medical workers say they lack adequate supplies of personal protective equipment for tackling COVID-19 and the risk of infection is making some reluctant to treat patients.

The complaints follow revelations on Sunday that seven health workers including two doctors and two nurses had contracted the virus.

So far the east African nation has 507 cases of COVID-19 with no deaths.

Ethiopia Receives Chinese Donation Of 520,000 Masks, Medical Supplies

ADDIS ABABA, June 3 (NNN-ENA) – Ethiopia received donation of 520,000 masks and other medical supplies from five Chinese business companies and Dongguan municipal government.

The COVID-19 medical supplies donation to Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa city administration, which also includes a large number of disinfectants, forehead thermometers and respirators is expected to play a critical role in helping Ethiopia overcome the challenge posed by COVID-19.

US unrest: Former African presidents condemn Floyd killing

COTONOU, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Former African presidents have condemned the killing of George Floyd as violent protests continue in the US following his death in police custody.

The Forum of Former Heads of State and Government has urged African countries to “raise a strong protest” to the killing and demand that the “perpetrators of this crime and all other crimes of this sort be punished in the strongest terms”, according to a statement released by former Beninese President Nicéphore Soglo.

Military units respond firmly to terrorist attacks in Mozambique: president

MAPUTO, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said Sunday that the country's military units are responding firmly and bravely to the terrorist attacks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

Speaking to the national radio station while on a work visit in that province over the weekend, Nyusi said the results of military operations are encouraging.

South Africa postpones reopening of schools after teachers unions defy return-to-work order

PRETORIA, June 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South Africa has pushed back Monday’s reopening of schools by a week, the Department of Basic Education said, saying that a substantial number are not ready to welcome back pupils.

The plan for grades 7 and 12, the last years of primary and secondary school respectively, to return on Monday backfired after teachers’ unions and governing associations urged school staff to defy the government order, saying schools did not have protective equipment (PPE) to keep educators and pupils safe.

China to give Africa 30 million corona test kits monthly: Ramaphosa

PRETORIA, June 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — China will give Africa 30 million test kits per month, as well as 10,000 ventilators and 80 million masks, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa disclosed on Sunday during a virtual meeting with top editors in the country.

He did not specify when this initiative will start or how long it would run. Beijing has sent logistic and human resource support to a number of African countries since the pandemic arrived on the continent.

AU, UNICEF condemn killing of health workers in Somalia

MOGADISHU, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Sunday in separate statements condemned the abduction and deliberate killing of seven health workers and a civilian at a local health center in southern Somalia.

Henrietta Fore, UNICEF executive director said these heinous attacks interfere with fundamental protections of the right to health and the perpetrators must be held accountable.

Attack in northern Burkina Faso kills at least 15

OUAGADOUGOU (Reuters) - At least 15 people were killed following an attack on a convoy transporting traders in a town in northern Burkina Faso on Friday, the government said on Saturday.

The attack, carried out by an unidentified group of assailants, left several others wounded. Many more were still unaccounted for, the government said in a statement.

Burkina Faso has been battling armed combatants with links to al Qaeda and the Islamic State since 2017.

UN extends South Sudan arms embargo through May 2021

UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution extending individual sanctions and an arms embargo in South Sudan through May 2021, despite reluctance from Russia, China and South Africa.

Drafted by the United States, the resolution received 12 votes in favor, with the three above countries abstaining.

The Council additionally scheduled a midterm review to take place by Dec 15 and expressed its “readiness to consider adjusting measures… including through modifying, suspending, lifting or strengthening.”

Mauritius to end lockdown but beaches remain closed

PORT LOUIS, May 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The prime minister of Mauritius has announced the lifting of the strict coronavirus lockdown from Sunday.

Since March 20 the Indian Ocean island nation, a popular tourist destination, has only allowed people to leave their homes if they have a work permit.

Residents have also only been allowed out to supermarkets on certain days – dependent on first letter of their surname.

But Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said supermarkets and shops would be allowed to operate normally from May 31.
