Tanzania: 230bn/- to implement robust agricultural projects

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 18 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE Tanzanian government in collaboration with Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is looking for funding totaling 100 million US dollars (about 230bn/-), to implement robust agricultural projects in the country aiming at empowering more Tanzanians economically, especially the young persons.

Malawi close to sealing $54 mln IMF emergency funding for economic shock

LILONGWE, Oct 18 (Reuters) - International Monetary Fund approval of up to $54 million of emergency funding for Malawi is likely in the next couple of days, sources said on Tuesday, as the southern African country struggles with acute forex shortages.

Malawi, which is experiencing chaotic queues at fuel stations that are running dry due to a lack of foreign currency, would be the first African country to receive special IMF emergency financing to deal with the global inflation crisis.

South Sudan dismisses report of graft involving $1bn credit line for vulnerable communities

17 October 2022; MEMO: A top official in South Sudan, on Monday, denied a recent report that corruption had deprived vulnerable communities of food, fuel, and medicine to be acquired through a $1 billion credit line, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Information Minister, Michael Makuei Lueth, said the accusations in the report, published by US-based advocacy group, The Sentry, were biased.

Uganda institutes lockdown measures in Ebola-affected districts

KAMPALA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced a decision over the weekend to put the Ebola-affected central Ugandan districts of Mubende and Kassanda on lockdown with immediate effect.

Museveni said in a national address telecast live that the lockdown will last 21 days.

According to the measures, movement in and out of the two districts is prohibited. The two districts have also been placed under a night curfew with only cargo vehicles allowed to exit.

Nigeria races to assist flood victims; death toll tops 600

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The death toll from floods in Nigeria this year has increased to 603 as local authorities race to get relief items to hundreds of thousands being evacuated from their submerged homes.

More than 1.3 million people have been displaced by the disaster, which has affected people across 33 of Nigeria’s 36 states, the nation’s humanitarian affairs ministry said late Sunday.

Namibia reports outbreak of foot and mouth disease

WINDHOEK, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has been hit by another outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the Zambezi region, which is located in the extreme northeast of the country, agricultural officials said in an e-mailed statement Saturday.

The country's Chief Veterinary Officer Albertina Shilongo said the areas of Kabbe South and North constituencies have been declared FMD-infected areas, while the entire Zambezi region is declared a disease management area (DMA).

Tanzanian and Kenyan Presidents pledge to tackle human trafficking

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 14 (NNN-GNA) — Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to strengthen border security through cooperation to weed out transboundary crime, including human and drug trafficking, terrorism and poaching.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu and Kenya’s President William Ruto made the announcement at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam following bilateral talks.

UN vows to step up efforts with Somalia on counter-terrorism

MOGADISHU, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Friday vowed to step up its partnership with Somalia on counter-terrorism.

The UN which joined the people and government of Somalia in remembering the victims and survivors of the deadly suicide bombing in the capital, Mogadishu in 2017 said it will also help Somalia on its development path.
