Nigerian police urged to be 'humane' as they tighten security

LAGOS, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Nigerian police are to tighten security at schools and hospitals and conduct stop and search operations in a bid to stamp out increasing gang attacks, they said on Sunday, at the same time as being urged to be "professional and humane".

Attacks by Islamist militants and armed gangs are some of the biggest security challenges facing the country as it prepares to hold elections in February.

Odinga ahead in Kenya's presidential race, official results show

NAIROBI, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga led Kenya's presidential race, official election results showed on Saturday, pushing Deputy President William Ruto into second place.

With just over 26% of votes counted, Odinga had 54% and Ruto had 45%, according to results provided by the Kenyan election commission and displayed on a large screen at a national tallying center in the capital, Nairobi.

East Africa's wealthiest nation and most vibrant democracy held presidential, parliamentary and local elections on Tuesday.

Ethiopia says African Union's mediation only avenue for talks with Tigray rebels

11 August 2022; MEMO: Ethiopia said on Thursday that no "parallel" effort would be pursued for talks with Tigray rebels other than the mediation by the African Union with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as the facilitator, Anadolu Agency reports.

Addressing a weekly press briefing, Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Meles Alem reiterated Ethiopia's stand to engage in talks with the Tigray rebels without any precondition.

Kenyans anxious for news on next president, two days after tight vote

NAIROBI/ELDORET, Kenya, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Kenyans crowded round radios and televisions on Thursday, increasingly anxious for news of who their next president might be, two days after voting in an election ended.

The East African country's election commission (IEBC) has neither released a running tally of results nor said when it plans to announce the winner, but unofficial and sometimes conflicting media counts show a nail-bitingly close race.

Namibia central bank revises 2022 growth forecast to 3.2 pct

WINDHOEK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's economy is expected to grow by 3.2 percent in 2022 and by 2.9 percent in 2023, according to the central bank's latest Economic Outlook for 2022.

"The estimated growth for 2022 represents a 0.2 percentage point downward revision from the February 2022 release (3.4 pct), however, it is an improvement from 2.4 percent registered in 2021," said Bank of Namibia Director of Strategic Communications and International Relations Kazembire Zemburuka earlier this week.

Tanzania Wished Kenya Peaceful General Elections

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 10 (NNN-KBC) – Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, yesterday wished neighbouring Kenyans, peaceful general elections, as they went to the polls, to vote for their leaders.

“I am praying God be with you (Kenyans), as you fulfil your constitutional right of getting leaders of your choice, in a peaceful environment, unity, harmony and solidarity,” President Hassan said, in her official tweet. “Wishing you all the best.”

President Hassan was inspecting the Njombe region in the country’s southern highlands.

Severe drought displaces over 1 mln Somalis: UN

MOGADISHU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The number of drought-related displacements has surpassed one million to hit 1,002,796 people in Somalia since January 2021, the United Nations humanitarian agency said on Tuesday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said some 83,518 people were displaced in July by drought, a 26 percent decrease compared to the previous month.

Anxiety rises over claims in Kenya’s close presidential vote

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Human rights groups on Wednesday warned anxious Kenyans over “rising levels of false or misleading information being shared on social media” as the country awaited results of a close presidential election. The electoral commission indicated it would be at least Thursday before a winner is declared.

High-profile supporters of the two leading candidates were tweeting claims of victory, citing counts based on more than 46,000 results forms posted online by the electoral commission in a gesture of transparency.

USA: Blinken concerned over detention of Congo opposition figure

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said he was “concerned” about reports of the detention of an opposition political leader in Congo.

On the second day of his visit to the central African nation, Blinken said his delegation was “trying to get more facts” about the opposition figure’s detention which he said had happened “in the last 24 hours.” Blinken said his delegation had raised the issue with Congo’s government and he called it a “possible setback” in establishing “the right environment” for elections.
