Mozambican president urges young people to keep away from crimes

MAPUTO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi called on Monday the youth of the country to reject invitations of joining terrorist groups or illegal activities in face of the difficulties in finding jobs and the high cost of living.

The president was speaking to representatives from all over Mozambique during the launching ceremony of the country's seventh National Youth Conference in Maputo, where he saluted the young soldiers defending the nation against terrorists at the front line in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

Blinken heads to Congo after stop in South Africa

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, Tuesday to continue his three-nation tour of Africa.

In Congo, he will meet with government leaders and civil society groups during his two-day visit to discuss partnerships for regional security, human rights issues, environmental conservation, climate change and bilateral trade and investment, according to the U.S. Department of State.

Chad military gov't, opposition sign peace deal in Qatar

09 August 2022; MEMO: Chad's military government has signed a peace deal in Qatar with more than 40 opposition groups agreeing to hold reconciliation talks, Reuters reports.

Peace talks aimed at paving the way for a presidential election will start on 20 August.

The Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), the main rebel group, said it would not sign the deal despite last-minute efforts by Qatar's mediators to include them, report says.

Kenya's Ruto eyeing presidency on pro-poor campaign platform

NAIROBI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's sitting deputy president William Samoei Ruto, who is contesting the presidency under Kenya Kwanza (Kenya First) Alliance in the Kenya 2022 general elections scheduled for Tuesday, was born on Dec. 21, 1966.

Like any other rural child born when Kenya had just gained independence from British colonialists, Ruto went to public primary and secondary schools even as he assisted his parents to carry out several chores including herding goats and tending to the farm.

Blinken says US is “equal partner” with African countries

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The United States sees Africa’s 54 nations as “equal partners” in tackling global problems, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in South Africa Monday.

“Our strategy is rooted in the recognition that sub-Saharan Africa is a major geopolitical force — one that has shaped our past, is shaping our present, and will shape our future,” Blinken said at the University of Pretoria in a speech detailing the Biden administration’s policies for Africa.

African Union: Targeting of civilians stark violation of international law

08 August 2022; MEMO: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, yesterday criticised the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, saying that targeting civilians is a "stark violation of international law."

"The targeting of civilians and the continued illegal occupation by Israeli security forces of the occupied territories, are in stark violation of international law, and complicate the search for a just and lasting solution," Faki Mahamat said in a statement.

Kenyans gear up for polls amid optimism, high expectations
