India: Over 56,000 COVID-19 cases in country in single day

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) India saw a single day increase of 56,282 COVID-19 cases taking the country's virus tally to 19,64,536, while the recoveries have surged to 13,28,336, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 40,699 with 904 new fatalities being reported in 24-hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

There are 5,95,501 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently which contribute to 30.31 per cent of the total cases.

Trump's national security adviser recovers from COVID-19

Washington, Aug 5 (AP/PTI) President Donald Trump's national security adviser, who tested positive for the coronavirus, returned to work Tuesday after recovering from a mild case of COVID-19, the White House said.

Robert O'Brien has resumed his meetings with the president, said National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot.

India: KMC distributes masks and gloves to safai staff

Kanpur: The Municipal Corporation has taken a decision to distribute as many as 16500 masks to its safai employees in view of the high incidence of the deadly corona cases.

Detailing the announcements Dr Amit Singh Nagar Swasthya Adhikari said that each safai Karamchari of the KMC would get three face masks and two pairs of gloves. 

He added that these necessary items have been dispatched to all the six zones of the Nagar Nigam. 

City dwellers have felt that sanitation would be improved after the distribution of the masks and gloves to the safai staff.

Egypt churches reopen after coronavirus closures

04 Aug 2020; MEMO: Egyptian churches yesterday reopened and held the first mass after a four-month hiatus that aimed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus among churchgoers, the Coptic Orthodox Church said in a statement.

The churches’ reopening is accompanied by strict health and safety protocol and comes as an implementation of the Cabinet Council’s decision, which was followed by instructions by Pope Tawadros of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

India: Former Kar CM Siddaramaiah tests COVID-19 positive

Bengaluru, Aug 4 (PTI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors.

The Manipal hospital, where the 71-year-old leader of opposition in the state assembly is undergoing treatment, said he is "doing well" and is "stable currently".

"I have been tested positive for #Covid19 & also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution.

UAE, Iran foreign ministers discuss COVID challenge

03 Aug 2020; MEMO: The foreign minister of United Arab Emirates told his Iranian counterpart that strengthening bilateral cooperation was an important element in tackling the coronavirus, UAE state news agency WAM said on Sunday, quoted by Reuters.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan made the comment to Mohammad Javad Zarif in a video call during which they also exchanged greetings for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, it said.

India: Union IT Minister Prasad self isolates; met Amit Shah on Saturday

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) IT and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has gone into self isolation, as he had met Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday evening, a source said.

Prasad does not have any symptoms and the self-isolation is purely based on existing protocol, the source added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and is getting admitted to a hospital following the advice of doctors.

Philippine capital returning to lockdown as virus surges

Manila, Aug 3 (AP/PTI) The Philippine president has agreed to place the capital and outlying provinces back under a lockdown after medical groups warned that the country was waging a losing battle against the coronavirus amid an alarming surge in infections.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Monday that metropolitan Manila, the capital region of more than 12 million people, and five densely populated provinces will revert to stricter quarantine restrictions for two weeks starting Tuesday.

Pakistan reports 330 new COVID-19 cases; nationwide tally reaches 280,027

Islamabad, Aug 3 (PTI) The number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan reached 280,027 on Monday after 330 new infections were detected in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said.

Eight people died during the period, taking the total number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country to 5,984, the Ministry of National Health Services said.

India: UP minister Mahendra Singh tests positive for COVID-19

Lucknow, Aug 2 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh minister Mahendra Singh has tested positive for COVID-19, a state government official said on Sunday.

"He tested positive for COVID-19 around two-three days ago," he said.

The news of Singh, the Jal Shakti minister of Uttar Pradesh, testing positive for COVID-19 comes on a day when Kamal Rani Varun, the lone woman member in the state cabinet, succumbed to the disease.

Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh has also tested positive for COVID-19.
