India records highest one-day jump of 57,118 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) India's COVID-19 tally reached 16,95,988 on Saturday with a record single-day increase of 57,118 cases, while the recoveries surged to 10,94,374, according to the Union Health Ministry data

The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 36,511 with 764 people succumbing to the disease in a day, the data updated at 8 am showed

Israel sees over 1,700 new coronavirus cases

31 July 2020; MEMO: Israel on Friday confirmed another 1,786 infections from the novel coronavirus, Anadolu Agency reports.

According to the Health Ministry, the total count of cases in the country so far rose to 70,582, including 509 deaths, since the virus was first detected on Feb. 21.

A total of 43,813 people have so far recovered and been discharged from hospitals, the ministry said.

Anger has been rising in Israel over the government’s response to the virus.

Saudi King Salman discharged from hospital: Royal Court

Dubai, Jul 31 (AP/PTI) Saudi Arabia's King Salman was discharged from a hospital in the capital Riyadh after more than a week following surgery to remove his gall bladder, the Royal Court said.

The court said in a statement late Thursday the monarch, 84, left the King Faisal Specialist Hospital after a recovery.

India: SC directs Centre to ensure salaries paid to doctors on time

New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka and Tripura are yet to follow directives on timely payment of salaries to healthcare workers engaged in COVID-19, the Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court, which said it cannot be "helpless" in implementing the directions.

The court directed the Centre to issue necessary directions for releasing salaries of doctors and frontline healthcare workers engaged in COVID-19 duty on time.

India: Ram temple event at demolished mosque site: Priest, 14 Cops test corona positive

Ayodhya; 30 July 2020 (UMMN): One priest and 14 policemen on duty at Ayodhya's Ram Janam bhoomi complex have tested corona positive where PM Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony along with 50 VIPs on August 5.

Pradeep Das, assistant to the chief priest at the makeshift temple was tested positive. 14 policemen tested positive were either on permanent or roster duty.

Israel protesters accuse Netanyahu of inciting against them

30 July 2020; MEMO: Black Flag movement protesters in Israel have accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Public Security Minister Amir Ohana of inciting against them, Arab48 reported yesterday.

Local news reported “attackers, dressed in black, threw stones, glass bottles and pepper-sprayed some of the protesters who had walked from Ohana’s home to the Ayalon Highway, briefly blocking parts of it. The group began beating the demonstrators suddenly and without any provocation.”

Vietnam imposes more virus restrictions as outbreak spreads

Hanoi, Jul 30 (AP/PTI) Vietnam imposed more coronavirus restrictions Thursday as an outbreak that started in a popular beach resort destination grew with nine new cases.

Eight of the new infections were detected in the virus hot spot of Da Nang and another was confirmed in the capital Hanoi in a man who had returned from the coastal city, the health ministry said.

India: MP BJP chief tests positive for coronavirus

Bhopal, Jul 29 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh BJP president and Khajuraho Lok Sabha MP VD Sharma has tested positive for coronavirus, a health official said on Wednesday.

Besides Sharma, state BJP general secretary (organisation) Suhas Bhagat and another party leader have also tested positive for the coronavirus, he said.

"Came to know that Sharma (VD Sharma) is not well and I pray to God for his speedy recovery," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is recuperating from the COVID-19 infection, tweeted.

india: Maharashtra lockdown extended till Aug 31

Mumbai, Jul 29 (PTI) Maharashtra Government on Wednesday extended the lockdown in the state till August 31 in view of rising coronavirus cases, which crossed the four- lakh mark in the day.

A notification issued by Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar said the decision has been taken as an "emergency step to prevent and contain" the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the Mission Begin Again initiative, malls and market complexes without theatres, food courts and restaurants will be operational between 9 am and 7 pmfrom August 5, the notification said.

CDC director admits U.S. failed to recognize coronavirus threat from Europe

WASHINGTON, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The United States failed to recognize the coronavirus threat from Europe in time, Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has said.

Since the country's COVID-19 epidemic broke out, the United States has reported over 4.4 million confirmed cases and over 150,000 deaths.

"The introduction from Europe happened before we realized what was happening," Redfield said in an interview with ABC News on Tuesday.
