UK currently has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus deaths in Europe

LONDON, May 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UK’s death toll is now higher than Italy and second only to the U.S.

The UK now has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus-related deaths in Europe and the second-highest in the world.

Data released on Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shows a total of 32,375 deaths involving COVID-19 have now been registered across the UK up to May 2, surpassing Italy’s total of 29,079.

Only the U.S. with 69,925 has reported more deaths linked with coronavirus.

EU citizens praise COVID-19 treatment in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (NNN-BERNAMA) — European citizens treated for COVID-19 in Malaysia have shared positive words about their experience, said Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the EU to Malaysia, Maria Castillo Fernandez.

“We hear only good things from the European citizens who have been treated for COVID-19 in Malaysia,” she said.

Fernandez expressed her gratitude towards Malaysia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) and the hospital staffs here, and also appreciated the fact that the Ministry briefed embassies with timely information and maintained contact with them.

Brazilian Amazon mayor pleads for world help on virus

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The mayor of Manaus, the biggest city in the Amazon rainforest region, asked world leaders Tuesday for help fighting the novel coronavirus, which has brought his city’s health system to the brink of collapse.

Manaus is the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, which has been devastated by the pandemic.

Hong Kong to lift major social restrictions as corona virus fades

HONG KONG, May 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Hong Kong announced plans to ease major social distancing measures, including reopening schools, cinemas, bars and beauty parlours after the Chinese territory largely halted local transmission of the deadly Coronavirus.

The relaxation, which comes into effect Friday, will be a boost for a city mired in a deep recession following months of virus restrictions as well as anti-government protests that have battered the economy.

Jakarta to revoke business licenses of 200 companies that flouted PSBB

JAKARTA, May 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) —The Jakarta administration will revoke the business licenses of at least 200 companies that have flouted the implementation of large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in the capital.

Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) head Arifin said his agency was currently preparing the dossiers on the companies, which would be submitted to the city’s Capital Investment and One Stop Service (DPMPTSP) for the revocation of business licenses.

U.S., UK launch trade talks, pledge quick deal as virus ravages global economy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and Britain launched formal negotiations on a free trade agreement on Tuesday, vowing to work quickly to seal a deal that could counter the massive drag of the coronavirus pandemic on trade flows and the two allies’ economies.

The talks, to be conducted virtually, will involve over 300 U.S. and UK staff and officials in nearly 30 negotiating groups, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and UK trade minister Liz Truss said in a joint statement.

India: Congress condemns BJP move to reopen liquor shops

Bhopal, May 5 (PTI) The Congress in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday heaped scorn on the BJP government for allowing reopening of liquor shops in the state amidst the nationwide coronavirus lockdown that has caused financial distress.

The Opposition party suggested that the government also allow reopening of jewellery shops so that people lacking resources can pawn ornaments of their wives for purchasing booze.

India: 27 migrant workers escape from Tilak Nagar shelter home

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI) Twenty-seven migrant workers have escaped from a temporary shelter home in west Delhi's Tilak Nagar, police said on Tuesday.

On Monday, 56 migrant workers were shifted from a government school in Punjabi Bagh to the newly created shelter home at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya where one migrant was already staying, they said.

India: COVID-19 death toll rises to 1,568; cases climb to 46,433

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI) The death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 1,568 and the number of cases climbed to 46,433 in the country on Tuesday, the Union Health Ministry said.

The number of active cases stood at 32,138, while 12,726 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said.

The total number of cases also includes 111 foreign nationals

Lebanon Receives Donation From Iran For Fight Against COVID-19

BEIRUT, May 5 (NNN-NNA) – Lebanon received, on Monday, donation from Iran, for the fight against COVID-19.

“Iran’s help is much appreciated, while the country is struggling at the same time to fight against the virus,” Lebanese Health Minister, Hamad Hassan said, during a ceremony at the airport, to receive the donation.

The donation include 15 ventilators, 5,000 PCR tests and Personal Protective Equipment.
